Move your server from BisectHosting

Find your SFTP login in BisectHosting's Starbase panel, copy your files with the Migrate tab, and bring stored instances or backups across by hand.

Updated 5 min read

BisectHosting's Starbase panel shows an SFTP login for each server. Enter it in the Migrate tab on your Play Your Way server and we copy the files across, leaving the BisectHosting server as it was until you cancel it.

Steps checked against BisectHosting's documentation in September 2026.

Find your SFTP details in Starbase

  1. On the BisectHosting website, open Panels and choose Starbase. Sign in with the Starbase login from your welcome email (it's separate from the Billing panel login), or choose Login with Billing Panel, then Authorise.
  2. Under My Servers, select the server you're moving.
  3. Stop the server so the world finishes saving. On Minecraft Java, note the World Name shown on the panel.
  4. Open the Files tab and select SFTP (some BisectHosting guides call it SFTP Credentials).
  5. In the SFTP Details window, skip Launch SFTP and note these values:
    • Host: the address and port in one value, written as address:port.
    • Username: copy it exactly.
    • Password: not shown. SFTP uses your Starbase panel password, which you can change under the Account icon > My Account > Update Password.

Enter the details in the Migrate tab

  1. In the dashboard, open your new server and select Migrate in the left rail. On a phone, open the tab menu at the top of the panel and pick Migrate.
  2. Set Protocol to SFTP.
  3. Split BisectHosting's Host value at the colon: the part before it goes in Address, the number after it in Port. Replace the 22 that Port fills in for SFTP.
  4. Paste the Username, and enter your Starbase panel password in Password.
  5. Select Connect & show my files. The list should show the same files and folders as BisectHosting's Files tab.

Ticking files, the backup, starting the copy and the finish email work the same for every host: follow Move your server from another host from here.

Minecraft: tick a world with its own name

The Migrate tab pre-ticks world, world_nether and world_the_end. BisectHosting names the world folder after the panel's World Name, so any other name starts unticked.

  1. In Tick what to copy, find the folder named after your World Name and tick it.
  2. On Paper or Spigot, also tick <World Name>_nether and <World Name>_the_end. Vanilla keeps both dimensions inside the main world folder.
  3. When the copy finishes, open the Config Editor tab and check that World folder matches your World Name. If it doesn't, change it before you start the server.
Warning

If World folder names a folder that doesn't exist, the server generates a fresh world. Your copied world stays on disk: fix the name and restart.

Bring across a stored instance or a backup

If your files are in a stored (inactive) instance that the Migrate tab doesn't list, or the connection won't work, download them from Starbase and upload them yourself.

Download a stored instance

  1. Stop the server, then choose Manage on the Active Instance table.
  2. On the stored instance, open More Options (the three dots) and choose Download.
  3. Choose the files and select Download.
  4. When the Download Ready notice appears, select Click Here. The file is also in the latest Creating Instance Download entry under Activity Log > Live Activities.

Download a backup

  1. Open Backups from the Starbase sidebar.
  2. Choose Download on the backup. Some BisectHosting guides place it under Edit.
  3. Under What would you like to download?, pick Download all files, then select Download.

Upload the download here

  1. Take a backup of your new server in the Backups tab. Uploading and extracting can replace files the server already has.
  2. Upload the file in the File Manager. Browser uploads stop at 100 MB, so send anything bigger with Connect over SFTP with FileZilla or WinSCP.
  3. For a .zip or .tar.gz file, select it and choose Extract here.
  4. If the files land in a subfolder, select each one and use Move to… so they sit next to the server's other files. How to manage your server files covers the rest of the File Manager.

If the Migrate tab can't connect

  • That address doesn't exist - Address still ends in the colon and port, or has a typo. Enter only the part before the colon.
  • Nothing is listening on that port or The old host didn't answer - Port may still say 22. Enter the number after the colon in BisectHosting's Host value.
  • The old host rejected that username or password - SFTP wants your Starbase panel password. If you only sign in with Login with Billing Panel and don't know a Starbase password, use the backup download above.
  • That folder is empty - Copy the SFTP details again from the server you're moving, under My Servers.

Cancel BisectHosting last

Caution

BisectHosting's cancellation guide says cancelling a server permanently deletes its data. Keep a downloaded backup if you want a copy afterwards.

Once your players are on the new server and the world checks out:

  1. In the BisectHosting Billing panel, open Services and select the server.
  2. Choose Cancel, pick a reason, then select Cancel Subscription.

Frequently asked questions

Can the BisectHosting server stay stopped during the copy?

Yes. The Migrate tab only reads files over SFTP, so the game server can stay stopped. Keep the BisectHosting service itself active until the copy has finished.

I'm moving a modpack server. What order works?

Install the same modpack from the Modpacks tab first, then run the migration for your world and the configs you changed. A modpack install clears every file on the server, so doing it second removes what you copied. Install a Minecraft modpack on your server has the steps.

Can I move more than one BisectHosting server?

Yes. Run Migrate on each new server with the SFTP details of its matching BisectHosting server.
