Install a Minecraft modpack on your server

Back up your Minecraft server, install a Modrinth modpack from the panel, and get your players onto the same pack release.

Updated 6 min read

The Modpacks tab in your server panel installs a whole pack in one go: its mod loader, mods and configs, with the Minecraft version and Java set to match. It replaces every file on the server, so back up first.

Before you start

  1. Take a backup. Open Backups and press Create backup. How to create and restore backups covers restoring it.

  2. Check the pack fits your plan. Big packs need far more RAM than a plain server: see each pack's page on modded Minecraft hosting, or How much RAM does my Minecraft server need? for other packs.

  3. Warn your players. The server is offline while the pack installs.

Caution

Installing a modpack first deletes every file on the server: your world, server.properties, the whitelist and operator lists, and any mods or plugins you added. Without a backup, they can't be recovered.

Install a pack from the Modpacks tab

  1. Open your server in the dashboard and go to Modpacks, under Content in the left rail.
  2. Type the pack's name into Search modpacks…. The filters start on your server's version and loader, so if a pack is missing, set them to Any version and All loaders.
  3. Check the version and loader badges on the pack's card, since the server will run those, then press Install.
  4. A warning opens at the top of the tab. Press Install & reinstall.
  5. Wait while the top bar reads Reinstalling, which can take a few minutes.
  6. When the Reinstalling label clears, press Start. Modpacks boot slowly: the server is ready when the Console shows Done (…s)! For help, type "help".

Which packs can the tab find?

The Modpacks tab lists Modrinth packs only, each with a Modrinth badge, so CurseForge-only packs don't appear. The panel can't install packs from FTB, Technic or other platforms.

CurseForge packs install only with a new server: pick one in your cart's Modpack menu, or press Deploy on its page under modded Minecraft hosting, such as Deploy All the Mods 10 on All the Mods 10.

After the install

The install cleared your operators and whitelist. Re-add them with Minecraft whitelist: add players, set ops.

Warning

On a modpack server, changing the software or version in the JAR Manager removes the pack and reinstalls plain software. So does Reinstall in Settings.

Update the modpack

There's no update button, and the tab marks the current pack Installed, so you remove it first. This only works for a Modrinth pack: a removed CurseForge pack can't be installed again.

  1. Take a backup in Backups. A big update can break an older world.
  2. In the File Manager, download your world folder (world, unless level-name in server.properties names another). It downloads as a zip.
  3. On the Currently installed card, press Remove modpack, pick any software and version, press Remove & reinstall and wait for Reinstalling to clear.
  4. Install the pack again from Modpacks, as above. It gets the pack's newest release.
  5. Bring the world back with the World Import tab, as in Upload your singleplayer Minecraft world.

Go back to a normal server

You can't add a CurseForge pack back from the Modpacks tab after removing it.

  1. Take a backup. A modded world doesn't load cleanly without its mods.
  2. In Modpacks, press Remove modpack on the Currently installed card.
  3. Pick the software and version, then press Remove & reinstall.

How do players join a modpack server?

Each player needs Minecraft: Java Edition and the same pack at the same release.

  1. Share the pack's name. On the Currently installed card, it links to the pack's own page.
  2. Players install it in a launcher for its source: the Modrinth App or Prism Launcher for Modrinth, the CurseForge app for CurseForge.
  3. They pick the newest release for your server's Minecraft version (the badge on the same card), which matches your server unless the pack has updated since.
  4. They join with the address in the panel's left rail: Join your Minecraft server (and fix errors).

To send the mods directly, open the Mods tab, press Installed, then Export for players for a zip of the mods players need. A mod mismatch error means a player's pack release, Minecraft version or mod list differs from the server's.

If something breaks

To get your old server back, press Remove modpack, pick the software and version it ran before, and press Remove & reinstall. If the modded server ever started, delete its world folder in the File Manager, since a restore keeps files the backup lacks. Then restore your backup. Otherwise, match what you see:

  • Your server didn't finish installing (a red banner) - press Reinstall to retry the same pack. If a pack from the Modpacks tab fails again, remove it and try another pack or version. For a pack chosen when you ordered the server, use the banner's Contact support link.
  • Your server is still installing (a notice after pressing Install) - wait. The Install buttons unlock on their own when the current install finishes.
  • Couldn't install this Modrinth modpack. in the Console - the pack has no server build for that loader and version, Modrinth didn't answer, or the pack outgrew your plan's storage. Try another version first.
  • Couldn't download the server pack. or Couldn't unpack the server pack. (CurseForge packs only) - the pack is probably too big for your plan's storage. The Minecraft plans page lists each plan's storage.
  • java.lang.OutOfMemoryError in the Console - the pack needs more RAM than your plan has. Size it with the Minecraft server RAM calculator, then Upgrade or downgrade your plan.
  • No Modpacks tab - it only appears on Minecraft servers. On someone else's server, the owner has to give you the Startup & software permission in Team.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change Java's memory or startup flags?

No. The launch script sizes Java's memory from your plan's RAM on every start and applies Aikar's flags, and you can't edit it. A pack that runs out of memory needs a bigger plan.

Can I add extra mods to a modpack?

Yes. Install mods built for the pack's loader and version from the Mods tab and restart. Reinstalling the pack removes every extra.

Can I use my own custom modpack?

Yes. If it's published on Modrinth, search for it in the Modpacks tab. Otherwise, set its loader in the JAR Manager and add its mods, as in Install Fabric and Forge mods on your server.
