Set up a Tekkit or Tekxit server

Install Tekkit Classic, Tekkit Legends or Tekxit 3 from the Modpacks tab's Technic source, match the client builds, then start the server.

Updated 5 min read

Tekkit and Tekxit are modpacks that live on the Technic Platform. Technic's own listings carry a ready-to-run server download for each of them, and the Modpacks tab installs that download through its Technic search source. This guide covers Tekkit Classic, Tekkit Legends and Tekxit 3 [Official], then lists the other Tekkit packs that work the same way.

Checked against Tekkit Classic 3.1.2, Tekkit Legends 1.1.1 and Tekxit 3 [Official] 1.3 on Technic, October 2026.

Pick a pack

  • Tekkit Classic. Minecraft 1.2.5. The server download is Tekkit_Server_3.1.2.zip, which launches its own Tekkit.jar.
  • Tekkit Legends. Minecraft 1.7.10. The server download is Tekkit_Legends_Server_v1.1.1.zip, which launches a Forge 1.7.10 build renamed TekkitLegends.jar.
  • Tekxit 3 [Official]. Minecraft 1.12.2. The server download is TKX3-Server-1.2.zip, which carries Forge 14.23.5.2860.

Technic also lists Tekkit (Minecraft 1.6.4), Tekkit Lite (1.4.7), Tekkit 2 (1.12.2) and Tekkit SMP (2025) (1.12.2), each with a server download, plus a listing called Tekxit 3.14 Pi (Official) on 1.12.2. You find them with the same search, but this guide describes only the three packs above.

The pack scripts inside the downloads ask for different memory: 3 GB for Tekkit Classic, 2 GB for Tekkit Legends and 4 GB for Tekxit 3. The panel does not use those scripts. It writes its own launch script and sizes the heap from your plan's RAM, and keeps 10 percent of the plan back for the system, at least 512 MB, so pick a plan a little larger than the figure for your pack on Minecraft hosting. How much RAM a Minecraft server needs explains the sizing.

Install the pack

Installing a modpack reinstalls the whole server and replaces the current world, so use a new server or one you can wipe.

  1. Open Modpacks, under Content in the left rail. Press the Technic source button.
  2. Search for Tekkit Classic, Tekkit Legends or Tekxit. A pack with no server download shows No server download instead of Install.
  3. Press Install on the pack you want. The window reads Forge and the pack's Minecraft version.
  4. Keep Take a backup first ticked, which takes the backup for you. The install clears the old server files, so your current settings are replaced unless the window offers Keep my world, settings and player lists and you tick it. Tick Start the server when it's ready to start it by itself, and tick I agree to the Minecraft EULA if that box appears.
  5. Press and hold the Hold to Install and reinstall button for about three seconds, until it fills, then watch the Console tab.

The panel downloads the pack's server zip, unpacks it and finds the launch jar: Tekkit.jar and TekkitLegends.jar are read from the pack's own start script, and the Forge jar in the Tekxit 3 download is found by its name. Java is picked from the Minecraft version, and 1.2.5 is set to Java 8. Tekkit Classic started on Java 8 when this guide was checked and reached its Done line.

The Tekxit 3 server files include an eula.txt already set to true. If the panel's own EULA window appears when you press Start, accept it. Read Mojang's EULA yourself before you play.

First start and operators

Press Start on the Console tab and wait until the console stops printing and the server shows as running. When this guide was checked, Tekkit Legends loaded 74 mods on Forge Mod Loader 7.99.30.1492 and the console printed Done (4.271s)! For help, type "help" or "?", and Tekxit 3 [Official] loaded 122 mods on Forge 14.23.5.2860 and printed Done (18.263s)! For help, type "help" or "?". Your address is in the left rail under Server address: Connect to your server for the first time.

To give yourself operator rights, run op yourname in the Console.

Join the server

Everyone installs the pack through the Technic Launcher. For Tekkit Classic (3.1.2) and Tekkit Legends (1.1.1), the build that matches the server is the one Technic recommends, so the launcher's default choice, Recommended Version under Modpack Options, is right. Technic lists Tekxit 3 [Official] as version 1.3 and its server download as 1.2. Technic keeps no build list for this pack, so the launcher's Modpack Options offers only 1.3. Every mod jar in the 1.2 server download is also in the 1.3 client with the same file name except SerializationIsBad (1.3 on the server, 1.5.2 in the client), and the client adds 13 mods of its own, such as Xaero's Minimap and Xaero's World Map.

Common problems

  • The install says Technic has no server download. The pack's author may have moved the link, or Technic did not answer. Your files were left alone, so try again in a few minutes.
  • The install says "Couldn't start a backup. Free a backup slot, or untick the backup and try again." Delete a backup you no longer need under Backups (a protected backup has to be unprotected first), or untick Take a backup first, then try the install again.
  • Mod mismatch on join. The player's build differs from the server's. Use the build numbers above.
  • The server lags. Watch the RAM Usage card on the Console tab, and see Why is my server lagging.
Warning

Installing a modpack replaces the server's current files. Take a backup first.
