Upgrade or downgrade your plan

Change your plan or billing cycle from the dashboard: upgrades apply now at a prorated cost, and downgrades wait for your renewal date.

Updated 5 min read

You don't need a ticket to resize a server or change how often you pay. Only the account that pays for the server can do it, so team members you've invited won't see the plan controls.

Where to change your plan

Start from either place:

  • Billing: open Billing, find the subscription under Subscriptions (rows show the game and plan), then choose Actions > Change plan.
  • Server panel: open the server's Settings tab (under More in the left rail), select Change plan or game on the Plan and game card, and stay on the Plan tab.

Pick the new plan

  1. Under Plan, select a plan. Each row shows its RAM, CPU, disk and price, and yours is marked Current plan.
  2. On Minecraft, you can also add Additional RAM or Additional storage.
  3. To change how often you pay instead, keep your plan and pick a Billing cycle. The window takes one change at a time, so picking one locks the other.
  4. Select Continue.
  5. Check today's charge or the switch date on the Review step, then select Switch to (an upgrade) or Switch at renewal (a downgrade).
  6. The last step reads Plan changed or Billing updated, or Switch scheduled for a downgrade.
Note

Plans only move within the same game. To run a different game, open the window from the server panel and use its Game tab. Switching wipes the world, so read Reinstall your server or switch game first.

Upgrades apply straight away

A bigger plan or a longer billing cycle (monthly to annual) applies as soon as you confirm.

  • Cost: your saved card is charged a prorated amount today, and the review shows the exact figure first. For a bigger plan, that's the difference for the days left in your billing period. Your next invoice is the new plan's full price.
  • Password: the review asks for your account password.
  • Restart: the new RAM takes effect on the server's next restart. Use Restart now on the last step, or restart at a quiet time.
  • Resources: if the last step says Your new resources are being applied and they don't show within an hour, open a ticket under Support.

Downgrades wait for your renewal

A smaller plan or a shorter billing cycle (annual to monthly) is scheduled for your next renewal date. Nothing is charged or refunded today, the server doesn't change yet, and no password is needed.

  • Until then, the subscription on Billing shows the date and what it moves to. To call it off, choose Actions > Keep what I have.
  • On the renewal date, a smaller plan is applied to the server and we email you. Nothing restarts it, so restart it yourself to run on the new plan's RAM.
  • Any other change before that date cancels the scheduled one, and the review warns you first. So make any upgrade before you schedule a downgrade, and book a second downgrade only after your renewal.

Free up disk first

If the smaller plan has less disk, the downgrade is refused while your files use more than 90% of it:

Your server is using X GB of disk - too much for the Y GB on <plan>. Delete some files or backups first.
  1. Open the Disk Analyser tab to find the biggest folders.

  2. In the File Manager, download any of those files you want to keep.

  3. Delete the ones you don't need.

  4. Try the change again.

This check doesn't run again at renewal, so stay under the smaller disk until then. Server out of disk space? Free it up shows where the space usually goes.

If you can't change your plan

When Change plan is missing from the Actions menu on Billing, the Plan and game card in the server's Settings tab says why:

  • "Settle the outstanding payment..." - choose Actions > Pay now on Billing, then try again.
  • "This subscription is set to cancel..." - choose Actions > Keep subscription first. Cancel your plan or get a refund explains what that changes.
  • "This server is in holiday mode..." - resume it first: Pause your server with holiday mode.
  • No reason given - your subscription has no other plan or billing cycle to move to.

Frequently asked questions

Will changing plan delete my world?

No. A plan change only resizes the server's RAM, CPU, disk, backup slots and extra ports. Your world, files, settings and address stay the same.

Can I undo an upgrade and get the difference back?

No. Schedule a downgrade instead, which starts at your next renewal. A refund cancels the whole subscription and stops the server, as the refund policy explains.

Where can I see plan prices?

In the Change plan window and on each game's page, such as Minecraft Server Hosting Australia. Each modpack's page, listed on Modded Minecraft Server Hosting Australia, names the plan sized for it.

Is a longer billing cycle cheaper?

Yes. Quarterly, Semi-annual and Annual billing cost less per month than Monthly. The Billing cycle list shows what each one costs.

Will a bigger plan fix lag?

Not always. Check Why is my server lagging? Find the cause first, so you only pay for RAM when memory is the problem.
