Reinstall your server or switch game

Reinstall your server's game files or switch it to another game on the same plan from Settings, backing up first so you can get your world back.

Updated 5 min read

Pick Reinstall to repair the game your server already runs, or switch game to run something else without placing a new order. Both keep your server address.

Before you start

  1. Take a backup. Open the Backups tab, select Create backup and wait for it to finish. How to create and restore backups covers restoring it.

  2. Download it. Select Download on the finished backup. A newer backup can replace it once your slots are full.

  3. Warn your players. Reinstalling stops the server, so nobody can join until it's back up.

When should you reinstall your server?

Reinstall downloads the game's server files again and reruns its setup. Use it when an install failed (the panel shows Your server didn't finish installing) or when damaged files stop the server from starting.

Some games also reset configs: Garry's Mod rewrites server.cfg and workshop.lua, and Palworld swaps in a default PalWorldSettings.ini, keeping yours under a dated name.

Tip

Only changing the Minecraft version or loader? Use the JAR Manager instead, which keeps your world: Change Minecraft server version or loader.

Reinstall your server

  1. Open your server and go to Settings, in the More group of the left rail. On a phone or small tablet, pick it from the section menu, which shows the current tab's name.
  2. Under Danger zone, select Reinstall on the Reinstall server card, then Reinstall again to confirm.
  3. Watch the installer run in the Console. A Reinstalling label shows until it finishes.
  4. When the label clears, start the server. It's ready when the Console prints the game's ready line (Done (…s)! on Minecraft).

With a Minecraft modpack installed

The reinstall also removes the modpack. Pick the Server software and a Minecraft version no older than your world's, then select Remove & reinstall. To change packs instead, see Install a Minecraft modpack on your server.

Switch your server to a different game

Switching installs another game on the same subscription, price, renewal date and server address. Only the server owner can do it.

Caution

The panel warns that a switch "wipes the current world and files", and backups are the only way back. Take and download the backup in Before you start, and read Switch back to your original game first.

  1. In Settings, select Change plan or game on the Plan and game card, then the Game tab. A Change game button opens the game picker directly.
  2. Open Pick a game..., choose a game and select Continue.
  3. Skip Back up first: the switch doesn't wait for its "Pre-switch backup", which can replace your own backup on a one-slot plan. Select Wipe & switch to and the game's name.
  4. When the page reloads and its Reinstalling label clears, start the server, which runs on the game's defaults, and set it up with the Getting Started guides.

Which games can I switch to?

The list shows only the games that fit your plan's RAM, with each one's requirement. Games that need extra network ports from the start, such as ARK: Survival Evolved, aren't offered.

For a bigger game, raise your RAM on the Plan tab first. Plan changes stay within the plans of the game you first ordered (Upgrade or downgrade your plan). Holiday mode blocks switching, so resume the server first (Pause your server with holiday mode).

Switch back to your original game

Your original game is only listed if it meets the same rules. ARK: Survival Evolved never does, so an ARK server can't switch back from the panel. Palworld needs 8 GB, so upgrade a smaller Palworld plan on the Plan tab first.

  1. Switch to the game you started with. It gets back the startup settings from your original order.
  2. Wait for the install to finish, and leave the server stopped.
  3. On Minecraft, set the JAR Manager to the software and version your world last ran on, and wait for that reinstall to finish too. An older version corrupts the world for good.
  4. In Backups, select Restore on the backup you took before switching. The server starts afterwards if Start server after a restore is on.
  5. Join and check that your world is back.

If something goes wrong

  • Your server didn't finish installing - select Reinstall on the banner. If it fails again, use the banner's Contact support link.
  • Switched to (game), but the reinstall didn't start - select Reinstall under Danger zone in Settings to finish the switch.
  • Backup couldn't start (check your backup slots) - close the window and delete an old backup in Backups, or wait for the one that's running. Don't switch until a backup exists.
  • The server won't start - copy the first red lines from the Console. If you ask us for help, send them with the game and whether you reinstalled or switched.

Frequently asked questions

Does reinstalling delete my world?

Not by design: the installer replaces the game's server files and leaves world saves in place. The panel still warns files may be overwritten, so keep a downloaded backup.

Can I undo a reinstall?

Only with a backup. In the Backups tab, select Restore on the backup you took first.

Can a team member reinstall or switch the game?

Team members with the Settings permission can reinstall. Only the owner can switch the game.

Can one plan run two games at once?

No. A plan runs one game. For a second game, order another server from the game pages.
