Rename your server and set a custom address
Change the name on your dashboard, claim a free custom address players can join with, and set the name players see in each game's server list.
The name on your dashboard is a label for you and your team. Players see a separate name in the server list and join with an address, and changing one leaves the other two alone.
Open the Identity settings
- On the dashboard, press the wrench button (Server settings) on your server's card.
- Scroll down to Identity, which holds the Server name and Server address cards.
Inside the panel, Settings is in the More group of the left rail (collapsed at first), or in the section menu on a phone.
Rename your server in the panel
The Server name card sets the label on your dashboard card, in the panel's left rail and in the browser tab.
- Type the new name, up to 30 characters. Rename stays greyed out until the name changes.
- Press Rename. The button reads Saved when it's done, and Audit Logs records the old and new names.
Claim a free custom address
The Server address card gives your server an address: a name you pick, followed by the domain the card shows. Players can type it instead of the raw IP.
- Type a name: 3 to 30 lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens, not starting or ending with a hyphen.
- Wait for the line under the box to say the address is available. A taken, reserved or blocked name shows the reason instead.
- Press Claim. The card now shows your full address with Change and Release buttons. Allow a few minutes before you share it.
When you open Settings, the card checks your address and puts back a missing DNS record, showing Address restored. If that fails, it shows Something went wrong with this address with a Try again button.
Change or release the address
To change it:
- Press Change and type the new name.
- Press Save. The new address goes live before the old one is switched off.
To release it, press Release and confirm. Players go back to joining with the raw IP.
Players who saved the old address can't join with it after a change or release. Post the new address to your group before you switch.
Do players need the port?
Every address points at your server's IP, but only a Minecraft one carries the port too.
- Minecraft: Java Edition - players type the address on its own (Join your Minecraft server (and fix errors)). Bedrock players use the Crossplay tab's details.
- Rust, ARK, Palworld and Garry's Mod - players type the address, a colon, then the port. Copy the whole line from Server address in the left rail, not the dashboard's IP line, which leaves the port off. If a join box rejects the address, use the numeric IP and port on the Primary row under Network ports in Settings.
- Valheim - with crossplay on, players use the join code instead. With it off, it works like Rust. Valheim server: join code, crossplay, mods covers both.
Change the server name in the game's server list
Rust, ARK, Palworld and Valheim keep the name in Startup:
- Open Startup in the More group.
- Type the new name on the Server Name card and press its Save button.
- Restart the server. The game reads the name only when it starts.
Game by game:
- Minecraft - players name the server themselves when adding it. Under that name they see the Server list message (
motdinserver.properties): change it in the Config Editor, World section, press Save changes and restart. How to manage your server files covers editing the file by hand. - Rust - Server Name (
HOSTNAME). Aserver.hostnameline in server.cfg overrides it, so leave that line out. See Rust server setup: connect, admin and wipes. - ARK: Survival Evolved - Server Name (
SESSION_NAME). - Palworld - Server Name (
SERVER_NAME). The panel rewritesServerNamein PalWorldSettings.ini on every boot, so file-only edits don't last. See Palworld server settings and best presets. - Valheim - Server Name (
SERVER_NAME). The server won't start if the name contains the join password. - Garry's Mod - the
hostnameline ingarrysmod/cfg/server.cfg, edited in the File Manager with the server stopped. See GMod server: connect, Workshop, gamemodes.
Frequently asked questions
Does renaming my server change its IP?
No. Renaming, or claiming, changing or releasing an address, leaves the IP and port as they are.
Can two servers share one address?
No. Each address belongs to one server, and a server has one address at a time. Give each server its own, such as smp and smp-creative.
What happens to my old address?
It stops leading to your server once the new one is live, and anyone can then claim the name. Deleting a server also releases its address.
Can a team member change the name or address?
Only the name. Renaming needs the Settings permission, which also allows a reinstall and isn't in the Co-admin preset. The address stays with the owner.
Can I use my own domain name?
Not from the panel. The Server address card only gives out names under the domain it shows.
