Can Fabric mods run on Forge? We tested it
No: on our Forge 1.21.1 server, Fabric mods were skipped without a word. Install Fabric, Forge or NeoForge mods and fix the errors we saw.
Mods change Minecraft itself: new items, new dimensions, new machines. The trade-off: your server AND every player need the same mod loader and (mostly) the same mods installed. That's the big difference from plugins, which are server-only.
Can Fabric mods run on Forge?
Not on their own. A Fabric mod is built for Fabric Loader and Fabric API, and a Forge or NeoForge mod is built for Forge or NeoForge, so each loader only loads its own mods. Drop a Fabric mod into a Forge server's mods folder and the server won't load it.
We checked both directions on one of our own servers (Minecraft 1.21.1, October 2026), and neither one stops the server, which is what makes it easy to miss:
- Fabric mods on Forge 1.21.1: the server started normally and said nothing at all about Lithium, Chunky or Fabric API. They simply weren't loaded.
- A Forge mod on Fabric: the server started too, with one warning near the top of the Console:
Found 1 non-fabric mod:followed by the file name (herejei-1.21.1-forge-19.64.0.453.jar). The mod didn't load.
Either way, players who join with the mod on their own game hit missing content or a mod mismatch, so the server looking healthy isn't proof the mods are running.
There are two bridges, and neither is a sure thing:
- Sinytra Connector loads many Fabric mods on NeoForge. It needs its companion mod Forgified Fabric API, plus Launchpad on 26.1.2. Players need the same mods on their own game, so they need Connector too for any Fabric mod that also runs on the client. As of September 2026, its main line is Minecraft 26.1.2, with 1.21.1 kept as a long-term-support line for critical fixes, and its only classic Forge builds are for 1.20.1.
- Not every Fabric mod works through Connector. Look each one up on connector.sinytra.org before you build a pack around it.
- Kilt goes the other way and loads Forge and NeoForge mods on Fabric. Its own developers call it very experimental and warn it may break worlds, so keep it away from a world you care about.
The simplest answer is to pick the loader your biggest mods need. If your must-have mods are Fabric, run Fabric. If you're running a NeoForge modpack, stay on NeoForge and only bridge the odd Fabric mod you can't live without.
Using Connector on your server
We haven't tested Connector on our servers yet, so these steps are unsupported. Take a backup before you try them, and expect some Fabric mods to fail.
- Take a backup first. Then, in the JAR Manager tab, pick NeoForge and a Minecraft version Connector has builds for (26.1.2 or 1.21.1).
- Install Sinytra Connector and Forgified Fabric API, plus Launchpad on 26.1.2 (Connector's 1.21.1 builds don't use it), each in its NeoForge build for your Minecraft version. Search for them in the Mods tab, or download each
.jarfrom Modrinth and upload it into themodsfolder in the File Manager. - The Mods tab only lists mods for your server's loader, so Fabric mods won't show up in its search. Download the Fabric mod's
.jarfor your Minecraft version and upload it into themodsfolder in the File Manager. - Restart the server. When the Console shows
Done (...s)!, it's running. If it won't start with a Fabric mod inmods, remove that mod and check it on Connector's website.
Step 1: put the server on a mod loader
- Go to the JAR Manager tab.
- Pick Fabric, Forge or NeoForge and your Minecraft version, then click Apply change.
- Leave Take a backup first ticked and click Confirm & reinstall. Your world is kept, but configuration files may be reset.
Full walkthrough: Change Minecraft server version or loader. A modded server needs more memory than a plain one: How much RAM does my Minecraft server need? has the figures for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge.
Step 2: install mods on the server
- Open the Mods tab (it's the same tab as Plugins; the label follows your server software).
- Search for the mod, check it matches your loader (Fabric, Forge or NeoForge) and Minecraft version, and click Install.
- If the mod needs others to run, the store says so first (Needs 1 more add-on, for example). Click Install all so they go in together. Most Fabric mods need Fabric API.
- Restart the server.
A mod has to match your server's loader and Minecraft version. The store won't install a build for another Minecraft version unless you pick Any version in it, and on our test server that build then stopped the server from starting (see Common failures below). Sinytra Connector, covered above, is the way to run some Fabric mods on NeoForge.
What we measured
We timed the steps above on a Diamond plan (4 GB RAM) running Minecraft 1.21.1 on 14 October 2026. Idle RAM is the panel's reading about 90 seconds after Done, with nobody online.
| Setup | Switch in the JAR Manager | Start to Done | Idle RAM |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vanilla | about 10 s | 15 to 19 s | about 740 MB |
| Fabric, no mods | about 8 s | about 23 s (first start) | about 790 MB |
| Fabric + Fabric API, Lithium and Chunky | (mods install in 1 to 3 s each) | about 19 s | about 800 MB |
| Forge, with JEI | about 33 s | about 19 s | about 805 MB |
The backup the JAR Manager takes first added 4 to 5 seconds each time, for backups of 106 to 304 MB. Small mods barely move the needle: it's big content mods and modpacks that need the extra memory, and they also take longer to start.
Step 3: your players install the same mods
Each player needs the same loader and mods on their own computer:
- Install the loader from the Fabric installer, Forge downloads or NeoForge.
- Put the same mods in their
.minecraft/modsfolder.
Easiest way for groups: build your list as a Modrinth "modpack" profile in a launcher like Prism or the Modrinth App, and share it: everyone gets identical versions in two clicks.
(Some server-side-only mods, such as performance mods like Lithium, don't need to be on players' machines. The mod's page will say.)
Common failures
These are the messages our test server printed, word for word. Fabric stops before the world loads and prints the reason under Incompatible mods found! in the Console. After a failed start, the Installed view of the Mods tab marks the mod it names and lists the rest under Some add-ons didn't load at the last start.
A required mod is missing. We installed Chunky without Fabric API:
Incompatible mods found!
A potential solution has been determined, this may resolve your problem:
- Install fabric, any version.
More details:
- Mod 'Chunky' (chunky) 1.4.23 requires any version of fabric, which is missing!
fabric here is Fabric API. Install the mod it names (or click Enable on it if it's disabled) and start again.
A mod for another Minecraft version. We forced Lithium's 1.20.1 build onto the 1.21.1 server with Any version:
- Replace mod 'Lithium' (lithium) 0.11.4 with any version that is compatible with:
- minecraft 1.21.1
More details:
- Mod 'Lithium' (lithium) 0.11.4 requires version 1.20.1 of 'Minecraft' (minecraft), but only the wrong version is present: 1.21.1!
Delete it and install the build for your version. Without Any version, the store refuses it with isn't made for Minecraft 1.21.1. Pick Any version in the store to install it anyway.
A mod for the wrong loader. No crash at all, as described under Can Fabric mods run on Forge? above. On Fabric, look for Found 1 non-fabric mod: in the Console. On Forge, nothing is printed, so compare the mods folder with your loader.
To take a mod out:
- In Mods → Installed, click Disable to keep the file but stop it loading, or click the bin icon next to the mod, then Confirm, to delete it. You can also delete its file from the
modsfolder in the File Manager. - Restart. If you can't get it back up, restore your latest backup from the Backups tab (How to create and restore backups).
