RuneScape: Dragonwilds server settings

What Owner ID, World Name, Server Name, Join Password and Admin Password do on a RuneScape: Dragonwilds server, and how a change is applied.

Updated 5 min read

Every setting your RuneScape: Dragonwilds server reads from us lives in the Startup tab. This guide explains each one, what it accepts, how a change is applied and why editing the server's settings file by hand doesn't stick.

For the first start, see How to make a RuneScape: Dragonwilds server.

Change a setting

  1. Open your server in the dashboard and go to the Startup tab. Each setting has its own card with a description, a text box and a Save button.
  2. Type the new value and click Save on that card, or press Enter. Each setting is saved on its own, so save one before moving to the next.
  3. If the server is running, a Restart to apply note appears. Click Restart now, or press Restart later. Anyone playing is disconnected until the server is back up.
  4. If the server is stopped, the note reads Loads on next start instead. Press Start when you're ready.

The server only reads these settings when it starts. Until you restart, it keeps running on the old values, even though the tab shows the new ones.

The settings

Owner ID

Your Dragonwilds Player ID, which makes you the owner of the server. Find it in the game under Settings: My Player ID, bottom left, with a copy button beside it. It's exactly 32 letters and numbers, and the field accepts nothing else: no spaces, no dashes, no shorter or longer value.

A new server holds a placeholder here and refuses to start until you replace it. Dragonwilds server won't start? Fix it covers that.

World Name

The world the server loads, and the name players search for. Up to 16 characters: letters, numbers, spaces, hyphens, underscores and apostrophes. The game's world list cuts a longer name to 16, and players can only find it by those 16. A new server gets a name made just for it, such as PYW-K3X9QA, so no one else's world matches it.

Caution

Changing World Name starts a brand-new world. Your old one stays on the server. RuneScape: Dragonwilds worlds and saves explains switching between worlds safely.

Server Name

Shown as Created By in the game's world list. Up to 16 characters from the same set as World Name. A new server uses PlayYourWay.

Join Password

What players type to join. A unique password is generated when your server is set up, so it's never blank. To set your own, use 4 to 64 characters: letters, numbers, dashes and underscores. Spaces and other symbols are refused.

A new password applies from the next start, so restart the server and send the new one to your party.

Admin Password

Generated for you as well. Keep it to yourself. You don't need it to manage your own server: your Player ID in Owner ID makes you the owner, and the owner kicks and bans from Player List in the game's Esc menu. It takes 8 to 64 characters: letters, numbers, dashes and underscores. If it gets out, save a new one here and restart.

Auto Update

Leave this at 0. On 0 your server checks Steam each time it starts and only runs the update when there's a new Dragonwilds build, so a normal start is quick. On 1 it runs the full Steam update on every start, which is slower.

Where the join password shows

The join password also appears in the panel's left rail as Join password, under your server's name:

  • It's masked until you press the eye.
  • The copy button copies the whole password without revealing it.
  • The pencil jumps to the Join Password field in Startup.

The left rail reads the password when the page loads. After you save a new one, reload the page to see it there.

Team members only see the row if their access includes Startup.

Neither password is printed in the Console. The console hides the line where the game writes the join password into its log.

The settings file

The server keeps these settings in RSDragonwilds/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/DedicatedServer.ini, which you can open in the File Manager. On every start, before the game launches, the panel writes five lines into it from the Startup tab:

Line in the fileStartup setting
OwnerIdOwner ID
ServerNameServer Name
DefaultWorldNameWorld Name
AdminPasswordAdmin Password
WorldPasswordJoin Password

That has two effects worth knowing:

  • Editing those five lines in the file doesn't last. The next start overwrites them with the values from Startup. Change them in Startup instead.
  • The AdminPassword line can be missing when you open the file. The game rewrites the file as it boots and leaves that line out. Your admin password is still set: the panel puts it back on every start.

The other lines in that file are the game's own. Leave them as they are.

What isn't a setting here

  • The player cap comes from your plan, not from a field. The server works it out on every start and prints it in the console as [PYW] Player cap for this plan. To change it, upgrade or downgrade your plan and restart.
  • The ports are assigned to your server by us. There's nothing to set.

If a setting won't save or doesn't apply

  1. Save shows an error under the field - the value breaks that field's rule. Check the length and the allowed characters above.
  2. The Save button is greyed out - the box already holds the saved value.
  3. The change hasn't taken effect - restart the server. Settings load on start.
  4. Every change is recorded - the Audit Logs tab lists each startup change with who made it. Passwords are recorded as hidden, never in plain text.
