Enable Gravestone Protection in Dragonwilds
Gravestone Protection stops other players looting your gravestone. It is a setting each player turns on in the game, not on the server.
When a player dies in RuneScape: Dragonwilds, their inventory items are left in a gravestone where they fell, while worn equipment stays on them. On a shared server, other players can walk up to that gravestone too. Gravestone Protection stops that. It is a game setting each player switches on for themselves, so there is nothing to change on the server. This guide shows where it is and how to make sure your whole party has it on.
Checked against RuneScape: Dragonwilds 1.0.1, October 2026.
What Gravestone Protection does
Jagex added it in the 0.9 update as one of the multiplayer protections. Its notes describe it as an option in the gameplay settings so that other players will not be able to loot your gravestone. The official wiki says it is switched off by default, so a new character is unprotected until they turn it on.
It protects the gravestone of the player who turned it on. It doesn't protect anyone else's, which is why every member of your party needs to set it.
Switch it on
Each player does this in their own game:
- Open Settings.
- In the Gameplay settings, find Gravestone Protection.
- Turn it on, then close the settings.
Jagex's 0.9 notes call it an option in the gameplay settings, and the wiki says it is off by default. Each player turns it on in their own game, not on your server, so check it again after making a new character.
Ask your party to switch it on before the first expedition, not after the first death. It's easy to forget once you're back at your base looking for your gear.
Why there's no server setting for it
The Startup tab holds the server's own settings: Owner ID, World Name, Server Name, Join Password, Admin Password and Auto Update. None of them controls how gravestones behave, and the server's settings file doesn't either. RuneScape: Dragonwilds server settings lists what you can change.
If you want death to work differently for everyone, that is a world rule chosen when the world is created. Change difficulty and world settings explains how to host a world with its own rules.
On Hard difficulty the official wiki says you can only have one gravestone active at a time. Dying again before you collect the first one loses the oldest gravestone's items, so protection matters less than getting back to your gear.
If someone else takes a gravestone
- Check the player had Gravestone Protection on before they died. It only covers the player who enabled it.
- If a player is looting on purpose to upset the party, the owner can remove them from Player List in the Esc menu, as RuneScape: Dragonwilds getting started explains.
- Take a backup before a risky expedition on the Backups tab. Back up and restore a RuneScape: Dragonwilds world shows how to roll back.
