Set up Roguelike Adventures and Dungeons
Install the RAD 1.56 exploration modpack on Forge 1.12.2 from the Modpacks tab with its CurseForge server pack, then set it up for players.
Roguelike Adventures and Dungeons, usually shortened to RAD, is a Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge modpack. Its CurseForge page calls it an exploration-focused roguelike with quests, character and tool levelling, many new dungeons and structures, and extra dimensions such as Twilight Forest, the Aether and the Betweenlands. This guide installs it from the Modpacks tab, using the server pack its author publishes.
Checked against Roguelike Adventures and Dungeons 1.56 (RAD-Serverpack-1.56) on Forge 14.23.5.2864 and Minecraft 1.12.2, October 2026.
What it needs
- Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge 14.23.5.2864. The server pack's
variables.txtnames both, and recommends Java 8. The panel runs Minecraft 1.12.2 on Java 8 by itself, so you do not pick a Java version. - About 4 GB of RAM. The CurseForge page recommends 4 GB for the pack. Your plan sets the RAM, so read how much RAM a Minecraft server needs and check the Minecraft plans before you install.
- Free disk. The RAD-Serverpack-1.56 download is listed at 650.2 MB and unpacks to about 700 MB. The panel keeps the zip on your plan's disk while it unpacks, so leave room for both.
- The same version for your players. Players install RAD 1.56 from CurseForge.
- Not the sequel. Roguelike Adventures and Dungeons 2 is a separate pack on Minecraft 1.16.5, covered in Set up Roguelike Adventures and Dungeons 2.
Install it on your server
Installing a modpack reinstalls the whole server, so use a new server or one you can wipe.
- Open Backups and press Create backup if the server holds anything you want to keep.
- Open Modpacks, under Content in the left rail. Above the search box, choose the CurseForge chip.
- Search for
Roguelike Adventures and Dungeonsand pick the row titled exactly Roguelike Adventures and Dungeons (1.12.2, Forge). The results also list Roguelike Adventures and Dungeons 2 (1.16.5), 3 (1.20.1) and several packs with similar names, which are all different packs. - Press Install. The window that opens names the loader and Minecraft version it will use.
- Leave Take a backup first ticked. Tick Start the server when it's ready if you want it to boot by itself, and tick I agree to the Minecraft EULA if that box appears.
- Hold Install and reinstall until it fills, then watch the Console tab until the install finishes.
CurseForge lists RAD-Serverpack-1.56 as the server pack for version 1.56, so the panel installs that ready-made server. The pack holds the mods, configs and scripts but no Forge files. When a pack ships no server engine, the installer reads the pack's variables.txt and installs the Forge version it names.
First start
Press Start on the Console tab and accept the Minecraft EULA if the panel asks. The pack has over 200 mod files, so give the first start time. Share the address shown in the left rail (Connect to your server for the first time).
The pack's own server.properties sets the world folder to RAD BBOP, allows 10 players, uses a view distance of 8 and keeps Online mode on. Open Config Editor to raise Player slots or lower View distance (chunks), then restart.
Leave World type alone. The pack's server.properties sets level-type=OTG, which is Open Terrain Generator's world type, and the pack's mods folder includes OpenTerrainGenerator. It is not one of the choices the Config Editor offers.
Common problems
- If the install window lists mods to download, follow Modpack mods to download from CurseForge.
- The world lags while exploring. The CurseForge page recommends pre-generating the world when you create it. Watch the RAM card on the Console tab and the TPS reading in the left rail, and read Why is my server lagging.
- The server stops with an out-of-memory error. Read the end of the log in the Console tab, then use Change plan in the Settings tab.
- The server crashes at boot. Find and read a crash report shows how to name the mod at fault.
