Set up Roguelike Adventures and Dungeons 2

Install the RAD2 exploration modpack on Forge 1.16.5 from the Modpacks tab with its server pack, then fix the shop and quest book server issues.

Updated 4 min read

Roguelike Adventures and Dungeons 2, usually shortened to RAD2, is a Minecraft 1.16.5 Forge modpack. Its CurseForge page calls it an exploration-based rogue-like with quests, character and tool levelling, and a mix of dungeons, structures and extra dimensions. This guide installs it on your server from the Modpacks tab, using the server pack its author publishes.

Checked against RAD2 version 1.18 on Forge 36.2.39 (Minecraft 1.16.5), October 2026.

What it needs

  • Forge for Minecraft 1.16.5. The pack's manifest names Forge 36.2.39 and 291 mod files. The pack's own README says the server needs Java 8, and the panel runs 1.16.5 on Java 8 by itself, so you do not pick a Java version.
  • A lot of memory. The pack's LaunchServer.sh asks for 8000 MB at the start and 10000 MB at most. The panel does not run that script. It writes its own launch script and sizes memory from your plan, so the plan you choose sets the server's memory, not that figure. Minecraft hosting lists the plans.
  • Free disk. The RAD2-Serverpack-1.18 download is listed at 788.8 MB, and the panel keeps the zip on your plan's disk while it unpacks.
  • The same version on every player's computer. Players install RAD2 1.18 from CurseForge.

Install it on your server

Installing a modpack reinstalls the whole server, so use a new server or one you can wipe.

  1. Open Backups and press Create backup if the server holds anything you want to keep.
  2. Open Modpacks, under Content in the left rail. Above the search box, choose the CurseForge chip.
  3. Search for Roguelike Adventures and Dungeons 2 and find the row with the 1.16.5 and Forge badges. The first Roguelike Adventures and Dungeons is a separate pack.
  4. Press Install. The window that opens names the loader and Minecraft version it will use.
  5. Leave Take a backup first ticked. Tick Start the server when it's ready if you want it to boot by itself, and tick I agree to the Minecraft EULA if that box appears.
  6. Press and hold Hold to Install and reinstall for about three seconds, until it fills, then watch the Console tab until the install finishes.

CurseForge lists RAD2-Serverpack-1.18 as the server pack for version 1.18, so the panel installs that ready-made server. The pack's README says the server is joinable once a line from IceAndFire appears in the console, so give the first start time.

First start

Press Start on the Console tab and accept the Minecraft EULA if the panel asks. Share the address shown under Server address in the left rail (Connect to your server for the first time).

The pack's own server.properties allows only 5 players, with a view distance of 7. Open Config Editor, raise Player slots and review View distance (chunks), then restart. The Config Editor describes view distance as the biggest lever on RAM and CPU.

Two server problems the pack's wiki lists

  • Clicking the shop crashes. The wiki's Common Issues page says this happens when the server runs with online-mode=false, because some mods then cannot save data. Turn Online mode back on in Config Editor.
  • The quest book crashes on the server. The wiki calls this a random FTB Quests bug with no full fix. Its workaround is to open the quest book in a singleplayer world first, and it then works in multiplayer.

Other common problems

  • The install window lists mods to download. Follow Modpack mods to download from CurseForge.
  • The server stops with an out-of-memory error. Read the end of the log in the Console tab, then use Change plan in the Settings tab.
Warning

Installing a modpack replaces the server's current files. Keep the backup if you may want your old world back.
