Set up a Soulrend server
Install the Soulrend dark fantasy soulslike modpack on Forge 1.20.1 from the Modpacks tab using its large server pack, then start the server.
Soulrend is a Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge modpack that its CurseForge page calls a dark fantasy, soulslike RPG. Combat runs on Epic Fight with more than 100 movesets, and the pack adds bosses, hundreds of weapons, a skill tree and a choice of classes. This guide installs it on your server from the Modpacks tab, using the dedicated server pack the author publishes.
Checked against Soulrend v8.5.2 on Forge 47.4.26 (Minecraft 1.20.1), October 2026.
What it needs
- Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1. The pack's manifest names Forge 47.4.26 and lists 485 mod files. The panel runs Minecraft 1.20.1 on Java 17 by itself, so you do not pick a Java version. The manifest also names Java 21, which the panel does not use for 1.20.1.
- Free disk. The v8.5.2 server pack is listed at about 1.9 GB. The panel keeps the downloaded zip on your plan's disk while it unpacks, so the zip and the unpacked files sit there together for a while. Check Disk Analyser first if the disk is close to full.
- RAM. The pack page lists 6 GB as its minimal configuration and 10 GB as its recommended one, and both are memory allocated on a player's own computer. It gives no server figure, so start with the largest plan you are comfortable with and watch the RAM card on the Console tab. How much RAM does my Minecraft server need? has the general rules, and Minecraft hosting lists the plans.
- The same version on every player's computer. Players install Soulrend v8.5.2 from its CurseForge page.
Install it on your server
Installing a modpack reinstalls the whole server, so use a new server or one you can wipe.
- Open Backups and press Create backup if the server holds anything you want to keep.
- Open Modpacks, under Content in the left rail. Above the search box, choose the CurseForge chip.
- Search for
Soulrendand find the row that shows the 1.20.1 and Forge badges. - Press Install. The window that opens names the loader and Minecraft version it will use.
- Leave Take a backup first ticked. Tick Start the server when it's ready if you want it to boot by itself, and tick I agree to the Minecraft EULA if that box appears.
- Press and hold Hold to Install and reinstall for about three seconds, until it fills, then watch the Console tab until the install finishes.
CurseForge lists a server pack for v8.5.2, so the panel installs that rather than the player download. The server pack ships a Forge installer inside a folder named v8. The panel moves its contents to the server's root and runs the installer for you.
First start
Press Start on the Console tab and accept the Minecraft EULA if the panel asks. When the console prints a line containing For help, type, the server is up. Share the address shown under Server address in the left rail. Connect to your server for the first time shows players where to paste it.
The server pack's own server.properties sets the difficulty to easy and 20 player slots. Open Config Editor to change Difficulty or Player slots, then restart the server.
Common problems
- The install window lists mods to download. A few mod authors only allow downloads from CurseForge's own site. Follow Modpack mods to download from CurseForge.
- The server stops with an out-of-memory error. Read the end of the log in the Console tab, then use Change plan in the Settings tab.
- The server lags. Watch the TPS reading in the left rail and read Why is my server lagging?.
Installing a modpack replaces the server's current files. Keep the backup if you may want your old world back.
