Set up a Mineshafts & Monsters server

Set up Forge 1.16.5 in JAR Manager, upload the Mineshafts & Monsters server pack over SFTP, apply the readme's server.properties lines, then join.

Updated 5 min read

Mineshafts & Monsters is an RPG modpack for Minecraft 1.16.5. The project page lists a compulsory quest line, a story, factions that fight each other, and hundreds of new structures and creatures. Its server pack has no Forge of its own, and its readme says to set up a Forge server first and then add the pack's files. This guide follows that route on our panel: pick Forge 1.16.5, upload the pack, apply the readme's server.properties lines, and let players join.

Checked against Mineshafts & Monsters 1.11 (Minecraft 1.16.5, Forge), October 2026.

What it needs

  • Forge on Minecraft 1.16.5. The newest file on CurseForge is Mineshafts & Monsters 1.11, with a separate server pack, MnM_1.11_hf_Serverpack.zip, about 800 MB. The readme names Forge 36.2.39.
  • Java 8. The panel picks Java from the Minecraft version, and 1.16.5 gets Java 8.
  • RAM. The author lists 6 GB as the minimum and 7 to 8 GB as recommended for the full version. Choose a plan with at least the 6 GB minimum on Minecraft hosting.
  • Free disk space. You need room for the zip, about 800 MB, and the files unpacked from it, about 860 MB, at the same time.
  • The right pack. The author also publishes Mineshafts & Monsters - LITE and Mineshafts & Monsters - Adventure, which are different packs. This guide covers the full one by bstylia14.

Set up Forge 1.16.5

Switching software reinstalls the server. The panel keeps your world, but configuration files may be reset, so take a backup first.

The Modpacks tab is not used for this pack. It lists the pack as Minecraft 1.16 (not 1.16.5), and the one-click install ended with a 404 download error when we tried it. The pack's server files also carry no Forge of their own, so a Forge server has to exist first.

  1. Open Backups and click Create backup.
  2. Open JAR Manager, under More in the left rail. Under Server software, choose Forge. Under Minecraft version, choose 1.16.5.
  3. Click Apply change, leave Take a backup first ticked in the Reinstall server? window, and press and hold Confirm & reinstall.
  4. Watch the Console tab until the install finishes. Do not start the server yet.

The panel installs Forge's recommended build for 1.16.5 rather than the 36.2.39 the readme names.

Add the server pack

The zip is over the 100 MB browser upload limit, so it goes up over SFTP.

  1. Download MnM_1.11_hf_Serverpack.zip from the pack's page on CurseForge.
  2. Open the Settings tab and find the SFTP connection card, which shows the Host, Port, Username and Password. Connect over SFTP walks through an SFTP program.
  3. Upload the zip to the folder your SFTP program opens in. It is the same main folder File Manager opens at, the one that holds server.properties.
  4. In File Manager, find the zip and use Extract here. The readme says to drag all the pack's files into the server folder, and the zip's own top level holds mods, config, defaultconfigs, global_data_packs, scripts and shrines-saves.
  5. Delete the zip once it has unpacked, to free the disk space.

Apply the readme's server.properties settings

The readme says the pack will not work as intended without three lines in server.properties: allow-flight=true, enable-command-block=true and level-type=biomesoplenty. The Config Editor's World type list has no Biomes O' Plenty choice, so edit the file by hand.

  1. In File Manager, click server.properties to open it in the editor.
  2. Add the three lines, or change them if a line is already there.
  3. Save the file, then press Start on the Console tab. Accept the EULA if the window appears.

Set level-type before the first start. It decides how the world is generated, so it has no effect on a world that already exists.

Join the server

  1. Install the CurseForge app and search for Mineshafts & Monsters. The pack page tells players to allocate enough RAM but not too much, since either extreme causes lag.
  2. Version 1.11 is the newest on its page.
  3. Add your server in the multiplayer list with the address in the left rail. Connect to your server for the first time shows where it is.

Do not remove the pack's resource pack. The author says it is part of the pack.

Reduce lag with pregeneration

The readme suggests running pregen start 0 0 10000 minecraft:overworld in the console, leaving it for at least 30 minutes, then pregen pause minecraft:overworld and a restart.

Common problems

  • The server stops while loading. Check the Console log. A mod that is missing or in the wrong folder is the first thing to rule out, so look in File Manager that mods sits at the top level.
  • The world is plain vanilla terrain. level-type was not set before the first start. Back up, then use File Manager to rename or delete the world folder after you fix the line.
  • The server runs out of memory. Look at the RAM Usage card, and see Why is my server lagging.
Warning

Changing the server software reinstalls the server. Take a backup first.
