Set up a Cursed Walking server

Install the Cursed Walking zombie apocalypse pack on Forge 1.20.1 from the Modpacks tab, check its RAM and disk needs, then start the server and join.

Updated 4 min read

Cursed Walking is a Forge modpack that turns Minecraft into a modern zombie apocalypse. The pack's page calls it a fully featured, custom curated zombie apocalypse pack, and it is built for groups: its author recommends playing on a server unless you play with fewer than three people. This guide installs it from the Modpacks tab using the pack's own server files.

Checked against Cursed Walking v3.3 (patch) on Forge 1.20.1, October 2026.

What the pack needs

  • Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge. The pack also has builds for 1.16.5, 1.18.2 and 1.19.2. These steps use the 1.20.1 build, which is the newest. The panel sets Java 17 for 1.20.1 on its own.
  • A lot of memory. The pack's page tells players to give their own game at least 4 GB, preferably 6 GB, and calls the pack RAM demanding. It gives no server figure. The 1.20.1 server files hold 219 mod jars, so use the RAM guide and the Minecraft plans to size a plan.
  • Disk space. The 1.20.1 server files are a download of about 727 MB before they unpack.
  • The same pack for every player. Each player installs Cursed Walking on their own computer, at the same version. The pack's page says not to add OptiFine to it, except on the 1.16.5 build.

Install the pack

  1. Open your server and choose Modpacks under Content in the left rail.
  2. In the source chip row at the top of the tab, press CurseForge and search for Cursed Walking.
  3. Press Install on Cursed Walking - A Modern Zombie Apocalypse. The popup should read Forge, Minecraft 1.20.1. If it names another version, pick the 1.20.1 build in the popup's version list (it starts on Newest that fits your server), because this guide covers the 1.20.1 build only. If the list has no 1.20.1 build, or the popup has no version list and names another version, press Cancel instead of installing.
  4. Keep Take a backup first ticked, because the install clears your server's files and replaces its world. If the popup shows Keep my world, settings and player lists, tick it to keep your own world instead. If it shows a note about your world's Minecraft version in its place, your world is newer than 1.20.1 and cannot be kept: the pack starts a fresh world and your old one stays in the backup. Tick Start the server when it's ready if you want it to start by itself.
  5. Press Install and reinstall. The install can take a few minutes, and a pack this size may take longer.

First start

Press Start on the Console tab and accept the Minecraft EULA if the panel asks. The server files include a small starter jar and a forge-auto-install.txt that asks for Forge 47.4.0. On the first start the starter downloads Forge's installer for that version and runs it before it launches the server, so the first start is slower than later ones.

When the console prints a line ending in For help, type "help", the server is up. Copy the address from Server address in the left rail, and add it in Minecraft. Connect to your server for the first time shows how.

Common problems

  • Players can't join with a mod mismatch. Their pack version differs from the server's. Match them.
  • Out of memory or constant lag. Look at the RAM card on the Console tab. If RAM stays full, you need a bigger plan.
  • The install fails while unpacking. Your plan's disk may be too small for the pack. Open Disk Analyser, free some space and install again.
Warning

The pack's page says its licence is All Rights Reserved and that re-uploading it, even modified, is not allowed. Install it from CurseForge as above rather than from a copy someone else shares.
