Use the Sign Artist Plugin on Rust

Install Sign Artist on a Rust server, grant the right permission for /sil, /silt and /sili, and fix size, distance and download errors on signs.

Updated 4 min read

Sign Artist lets players put pictures and text on in-game signs from a web link. The server downloads the image and applies it to the sign the player is looking at. This guide covers installing it on a Rust server, the permissions each command needs, the settings and the common reasons a sign refuses to change.

Checked against Sign Artist 1.4.6 by Whispers88 on uMod (released 8 February 2026), October 2026. uMod describes it as loading custom images to signs from a remote URL. It compiled and loaded on our Carbon test server (Carbon 2.0.262, Rust build 2635).

Install it

Open the Plugins tab, search the Store for SignArtist and press Install. How to install Oxide/uMod plugins on your Rust server covers the tab, Oxide and Carbon.

On Oxide, a newly installed plugin stays unloaded until you restart the server or type oxide.load SignArtist in the Console. On Carbon it loads by itself within seconds, and the commands are c.load, c.unload and c.reload. The oxide.* commands, oxide.grant included, print nothing and do nothing on Carbon. Permissions only exist once the plugin has loaded, so grant them afterwards.

Permissions and commands

The plugin registers eight permissions. A player needs the one that matches the command they type.

PermissionWhat it allows
signartist.url/sil <url> and /sili
signartist.text/silt <message>
signartist.restore/silrestore on the sign you are looking at (the plugin's source registers the command under signartist.raw and checks signartist.restore inside it; because its raw test is inverted, a player without signartist.raw also sees "loading normally instead" on a plain /silrestore, so grant both)
signartist.restoreall/silrestore all
signartist.rawThe raw option on the commands; without it the plugin says it is "loading normally instead"
signartist.fileImage links that start with file://, read from the server's own disk
signartist.ignorecdNo cooldown between uses
signartist.ignoreownerChange signs protected by someone else's tool cupboard

To let every player paint signs with links and text:

oxide.grant group default signartist.url
oxide.grant group default signartist.text

On Carbon:

c.grant group default signartist.url
c.grant group default signartist.text

Using it in game

Stand close to a sign and look at it. The plugin finds the sign by where you are looking, and it must be within Maximum distance from the sign, which is 3 by default.

  • /sil <url> [raw] loads an image from a web link.
  • /silt <message> [fontsize] [color hex] [bgcolor hex] [raw] draws text.
  • /sili paints the icon of the item you are holding. It needs an item in your hand.
  • /silrestore [all] queues a restore of the sign, or of every sign with all.

Signs with more than one image, such as animated neon signs, take the image number first, for example /sil 2 <url>. The plugin replies with the correct syntax if you get it wrong. If the game does not let a player edit that sign, they get "You can't change this sign as it is protected by a tool cupboard" unless they hold signartist.ignoreowner.

Settings

Press Config on the plugin in the Installed list. The defaults:

SettingDefault
Time in seconds between download requests (0 to disable)0
Maximum concurrent downloads5
Maximum distance from the sign3
Maximum filesize in MB1
Enforce JPG file formatfalse
Enable Header Checktrue
Enforce Header Checkfalse
JPG image quality (0-100)85

There are also logging switches: Enable logging file, Enable logging console and Enable discord logging, with a Discord Webhook field. A cooldown of 0 means players can repaint as fast as they like. Set a few seconds if your players spam signs.

Common problems

  1. "The file exceeds the maximum file size of 1Mb." Raise Maximum filesize in MB, or use a smaller picture.
  2. "Failed to download the image!" Check the link opens an image directly and that the site is up. With Enable Header Check on, the plugin first asks the site for the file size. If that fails or the site gives no size, the Console prints a warning, and Enforce Header Check decides whether it stops there.
  3. "Unable to find a sign!" Look directly at the sign and step closer.
  4. "You don't have permission to use this command." Grant the matching permission from the table.
  5. It says it is queued, but the sign does not change. Downloads are processed in turn, up to Maximum concurrent downloads at once. Give it a few seconds.
Warning

Players can put any picture on a sign, including ones you would not want on your server. Grant signartist.url to a trusted group rather than default if that worries you, and turn on one of the logging options in the config so you can see who loaded what.
