Use the Save Announcer Plugin on Rust

Install Save Announcer on a Rust server, see the chat message it sends on each save, change its settings and fix the GUI Announcements setup that silences it.

Updated 4 min read

Save Announcer is a very small plugin that posts a chat message when your Rust server saves the world, telling players to "expect some lag". This guide covers installing it, the messages it sends, its settings and the one setting combination that makes it go silent.

Checked against Save Announcer 1.0.4 by Ryan on uMod (released 1 August 2018), October 2026. uMod describes it as announcing to all players when the server saves. The plugin is old and tiny, but the Carbon test server compiled and loaded it on Rust server build 2635.

Install it

  1. Open the Plugins tab, search the Store for SaveAnnouncer and press Install. How to install Oxide/uMod plugins on your Rust server covers the tab, Oxide and Carbon.
  2. On Oxide a newly installed plugin stays Unloaded until you restart the server or type oxide.load SaveAnnouncer in the Console.
  3. On Carbon it loads by itself within seconds. On our test server the Console printed [Save Announcer] Creating a new configuration file. and then Loaded plugin Save Announcer v1.0.4 by Ryan about forty seconds after the install. Its config appeared as carbon/configs/SaveAnnouncer.json. On Oxide it is oxide/config/SaveAnnouncer.json once the plugin has loaded.

What players see

The plugin has no commands and no permissions. Everyone online gets the message, and there is nothing to grant. It sends one of two messages in chat, depending on how big the world is:

  • Below the entity threshold: Server saving, expect some lag...
  • At or above it: Server is saving {0:n0} entities, expect some lag., with the live entity count filled in.

The threshold is the Amount To Trigger Entity Message setting, which is 150000 by default. Enable Entity Message is on by default, and if you turn it off the plain message is always used.

Settings

Press Config on the plugin in the Installed list. The file is grouped under three headings:

GroupSettingDefault
SettingsEnable Console Noticefalse
Entity SettingsEnable Entity Messagetrue
Entity SettingsAmount To Trigger Entity Message150000
GUIAnnouncements SettingsEnable GUI Announcementsfalse
GUIAnnouncements SettingsBanner ColorGrey
GUIAnnouncements SettingsText ColorWhite

Enable Console Notice also writes Server is saving {0:n0} entities. to the server Console, which is handy if you want to see saves in the log. The wording of all three messages is registered with Oxide's language system, so it can be changed in the plugin's language file, oxide/lang/en/SaveAnnouncer.json on Oxide (the standard Oxide language path), which is carbon/lang/en/SaveAnnouncer.json on Carbon, where we saw the file.

How often it speaks

The plugin posts from Oxide's OnServerSave hook, so it speaks whenever the server saves. Your Startup tab has a Save Interval setting for how often Rust saves the world, in seconds, and it is 60 by default, with 30 as the lowest value. With the default, expect the message about every minute. That is a lot of chat noise on a busy server. Raise Save Interval on the Startup tab if you would rather have fewer, or turn the plugin off. Typing server.save in the Console saves immediately, as covered in Rust server.cfg and admin commands.

Common problems

  1. No message appears at all. If Enable GUI Announcements is true and the separate GUI Announcements plugin is not loaded, the plugin returns without sending anything to chat. Set it back to false, or install GUI Announcements.
  2. Nothing happens after the install. On Oxide, run oxide.plugins in the Console. If SaveAnnouncer shows as Unloaded, restart or run oxide.load SaveAnnouncer. On Carbon, c.plugins lists the plugins and c.load SaveAnnouncer loads it, because the oxide.* commands do nothing there.
  3. You changed the config and nothing changed. Press Reload plugin after Save, or type oxide.reload SaveAnnouncer in the Console (c.reload SaveAnnouncer on Carbon).
Tip

Save Announcer only tells people about a save, it does not change it. If the lag itself is the problem, How much RAM does a Rust server need? is the place to start.
