Upload a Terraria world to your server

Move a Terraria or tModLoader world from your PC onto your server with World Import, keep your current world, and fix a world that won't load.

Updated 4 min read

Already have a Terraria world you love? Bring it onto your server and keep playing it with friends. The panel's World Import tab takes the world file from your PC, installs it, and sets your server to load it. Your current world stays on the server.

Before you start

  1. Match the software. A plain Terraria world goes on a TShock server. A world you played in tModLoader goes on a tModLoader server, with its mod data and the same mods. The Server software card in Startup shows which one you run.
  2. Stop the server. Terraria saves the running world when it shuts down, over anything imported underneath it, so the import needs the server stopped.
  3. Add the mods first on tModLoader. A modded world needs the mods it was made with, and the Mods tab installs them.

Find the world on your PC

On your PCTerrariatModLoader
WindowsDocuments\My Games\Terraria\WorldsDocuments\My Games\Terraria\tModLoader\Worlds
macOS~/Library/Application Support/Terraria/Worlds~/Library/Application Support/Terraria/tModLoader/Worlds
Linux and Steam Deck~/.local/share/Terraria/Worlds~/.local/share/Terraria/tModLoader/Worlds

Each world is a .wld file named after the world. On tModLoader it has a .twld file of the same name beside it: that holds the world's mod data, and you need both.

Tip

A world kept in Steam Cloud isn't in that folder. In Terraria's world list, press the cloud icon next to the world to move it off the cloud, and the file appears.

Check the file name

The file name becomes the server's World name, and the server only takes 1 to 20 letters, numbers, dashes and underscores. My_World.wld works. My World!.wld doesn't: rename it on your PC first, and rename its .twld to match.

The name inside the game stays what it was. Only the file name has to follow these rules.

Import it

  1. Open your server's World Import tab.
  2. Drop the .wld on Drop your world .wld here, or click to browse. On tModLoader, drop the matching .twld too.
  3. Once the upload finishes, pick the world in the list and press Import selected world.
  4. Read Replace the current world?. Back up now takes a backup first, which is the quickest way back if anything goes wrong.
  5. Press Import world.
  6. Start the server and wait for Your server is online - players can join now. in the Console.

Players join as they always do. Their characters live on their own PCs, so they bring theirs along.

What happens to the world you had

Nothing is deleted:

  • Your current world stays on the server. The Worlds tab lists it, and Switch to on its row loads it again on the next start.
  • If a world with the same name is already there, it's kept and renamed with pre-import and the date in the file name.

Big worlds

The panel takes uploads up to 5 GB, far more than any Terraria world needs. If your connection drops halfway, SFTP resumes where the browser can't: upload the files to the pyw-import folder, then open World Import again (or press Rescan above the list) and the world shows up to import. How to connect over SFTP has the login.

If it doesn't work

  • That's not a .wld - pick the world's .wld file from the Worlds folder, not a backup (.wld.bak) or a zip.
  • The name can't be a World Name - rename the file on your PC to 20 letters, numbers, dashes or underscores, and upload it again.
  • The world loads without its mods' items or blocks - the .twld didn't come with it, or the mods it needs aren't installed. Upload the .twld, check the Mods tab, and import again.
  • The server made a brand-new world instead - check the World name in Startup matches your file's name, without .wld.

Frequently asked questions

Can I download my server's world to play alone?

Yes. In the Worlds tab, the download button gets the .wld, then its .twld on tModLoader. Put them in your Worlds folder and Terraria lists the world.

Can I import a world from a phone or console?

The server runs the PC version of Terraria. A world from mobile or console doesn't move across with the panel.

Will my old world's progress be kept?

Yes. Everything in the world file comes with it: bosses beaten, NPCs, houses and chests. Characters and their inventories stay on each player's PC.
