Enable Journey Mode on Your Terraria Server
Make a Journey world on your Terraria server, then give players the Power Menu with TShock permissions or tModLoader config lines.
Journey mode gives players the Power Menu: duplicate items, set the time and weather, slow down biome spread and slide the enemy difficulty up or down. On a server it takes two steps. The world has to be a Journey world, and the server software has to let your players use the powers.
Checked against TShock 6.2.1 (Terraria 1.4.5.8) and tModLoader 2026.08.3.0, October 2026.
What Journey mode needs
Terraria's own character screen says it plainly: "Journey characters start with extra equipment. Can only be played on Journey worlds." Terraria's wiki adds the other direction, so a Journey character can only join a Journey world and a Journey world can only be joined by Journey characters. Each player makes their own Journey character in Terraria before they join.
A world keeps the difficulty it was made with. The Difficulty setting on the Startup tab only applies when the server builds a new world, so you can't turn an existing world into a Journey world. Make a new one instead.
Make a Journey world
- Open the Worlds tab and press New world.
- Type a Name (up to 20 letters, numbers, dashes and underscores) and pick a Size.
- Set Difficulty to Journey. Leave Seed (optional) empty for a random world.
- Press Use it on the next start.
- Restart the server from the Console tab. The server builds the world on that start, which takes a minute or two.
Your other worlds stay on the server. If you already have a Journey world on your PC, upload a Terraria world to your server instead.
The Power Menu
Players open it with the toggle button under their main inventory slots. It has seven functions: Duplication, Research, Time, Weather, Personal Power Menu, Infection Spread and Enemy Difficulty.
Let players use the powers on TShock
TShock checks a permission for each power, and its default groups don't hand them out. Only trustedadmin and owner start with them. The Make admin button on the Players tab puts someone in the admin group, which has none, so an admin there still gets nothing from the Power Menu.
To give all of them to every logged-in player, type this in the Console tab:
group addperm default tshock.journey.*To hand out only some, list them after the group name, separated by spaces. group listperm default shows what the group has afterwards. Players need to be logged in to be in the default group, so they type /login yourpassword after joining. Terraria TShock admin commands and groups covers accounts and groups.
Let players use the powers on tModLoader
tModLoader has no accounts, so the permissions live in the server's config file instead. Open the File Manager, edit serverconfig.txt, add a line for each power, then Save and restart. The file that ships with tModLoader doesn't list these lines, and the Server Settings tab doesn't show them, so add them at the bottom yourself.
Each line is a number: 0 locks the power for everyone, 1 means only the host can change it, and 2 lets everyone. For example, to let everyone set the time and freeze it:
journeypermission_time_setfrozen=2
journeypermission_time_setnoon=2The other keys follow the same pattern: journeypermission_time_setdawn, journeypermission_time_setdusk, journeypermission_time_setmidnight, journeypermission_time_setspeed, journeypermission_godmode, journeypermission_wind_setstrength, journeypermission_wind_setfrozen, journeypermission_rain_setstrength, journeypermission_rain_setfrozen, journeypermission_increaseplacementrange, journeypermission_setdifficulty, journeypermission_biomespread_setfrozen and journeypermission_setspawnrate. The examples here use 2.
