Turn Off Anti-Cheat on Your Terraria Server
Turn off tModLoader's Cheat protection, or loosen TShock's separate anti-cheat checks with settings and group permissions, and keep the server safe.
Terraria servers have anti-cheat checks that stop impossible actions, such as a player with far more health than the game allows. You may want them looser for a trusted group of players. The two server types handle this differently: tModLoader has one switch, and TShock has several separate checks. This guide covers both.
Checked against TShock 6.2.1 for Terraria 1.4.5.8, October 2026.
With anti-cheat off, a player can do things the game normally blocks. Set a Server password on the Startup tab before you loosen anything. On TShock you can also turn on Only players I add in the Players tab. Terraria server getting started shows both.
tModLoader: one switch
The Server Settings tab shows tModLoader's serverconfig.txt as labelled controls.
- Open Server Settings and find Cheat protection in the Server group.
- Change it from On to Off.
- Press Save changes. The panel tells you to restart the server to apply the change, so restart it from the Console tab.
The Terraria wiki describes this setting, secure, as adding additional cheat protection to the server, and the panel shows it as On unless you change it. Set it back to On the same way.
If the tab says Start the server once, tModLoader hasn't written serverconfig.txt yet. Start the server, then come back.
TShock: separate checks
TShock's GitHub page describes it as providing anti-cheat. You loosen it one check at a time, through the settings and permissions below.
Raise the health and mana limits
In Server Settings, under Gameplay, Highest allowed health and Highest allowed mana set the most a player can have before TShock treats it as cheating. Their defaults are 500 and 200. Raise them if you want players to be allowed more than that, then press Save changes and restart.
Switch off the range check
TShock's RangeChecks setting checks how far a player is from the blocks they place. It isn't in the Server Settings tab, so edit the file:
- Stop the server.
- In File Manager, open the
tshockfolder, thenconfig.json. - Under
"Settings", find"RangeChecks": trueand changetruetofalse. - Save the file and start the server.
Keep the quote marks and commas as they are, because a missing comma stops TShock reading the file.
Exempt a trusted group
Instead of weakening a check for everyone, give one group the permission that skips it. Run these in game chat (with a /) or in the panel's Console (without one), swapping vip for your group:
/group addperm vip tshock.ignore.placetileTerraria TShock admin commands and groups explains groups and the permission commands.
Check it worked
- tModLoader: open Server Settings again and confirm Cheat protection shows Off.
- TShock: ask the player to repeat the action that was being blocked.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to restart?
Yes for the Server Settings changes: the panel tells you to restart the server to apply them. Start the server again after a config.json edit as well.
Should I do this on a public server?
Keep the checks on if strangers can join. Loosen them for a named group with the permission method instead of turning a check off for everyone.
