Ban Items on Your Terraria TShock Server
Ban items with the itemban console command, let chosen groups keep using them, and stop admins spawning banned items on TShock.
TShock can ban individual items, so a weapon, a pet summon or anything else that breaks your server's balance can't be used by ordinary players. The panel has no button for it. You run a command in the Console tab, and two optional settings in the config file tighten it further.
Item bans need TShock, which is the default software. A tModLoader server has no item ban command. Checked against TShock 6.2.1 (Terraria 1.4.5.8), October 2026.
Ban an item
- Start the server and open the Console tab.
- Type the command without a slash, with the item's name in quotation marks if it has more than one word:
itemban add "Zenith"- TShock replies "Banned Zenith." If the name could mean more than one item, it lists the matches with their numbers, so repeat the command with the item's number in place of its name. If it finds nothing, it says "Invalid item."
You can use an item's number in place of its name any time.
See, undo and allow
The group names are the ones TShock already has: guest, default, vip, insecure-guest, newadmin, admin, trustedadmin and owner. Terraria TShock admin commands and groups explains them and how to make your own.
Who is exempt
A group with the tshock.item.usebanned permission can use banned items, which TShock describes as "Allows you to use banned items." On a default server trustedadmin and owner have it, so staff at those levels aren't stopped by your bans. Admins in the admin group are.
TShock's code has a flag for a player who is disabled by the item bans system for having banned wearables on the server, so wearing a banned item can disable a player. A banned item that a player drops without permission is eaten. The permission tshock.ignore.dropbanneditem ("Allow dropping banned items without the item being eaten.") lets a group drop them safely.
Stop admins handing banned items out
Two more settings in tshock/config.json control what happens when someone creates a banned item with a command. Neither is in the Server Settings tab, so edit the file: open the File Manager, go into the tshock folder, select config.json, press Edit, change the values, press Save, then restart the server.
PreventBannedItemSpawn: whentrue, banned items can't be spawned or given with commands such as/item. It isfalseby default.AllowAllowedGroupsToSpawnBannedItems: whentrue, groups you have allowed withitemban allowcan still spawn the item even thoughPreventBannedItemSpawnis on. It isfalseby default.
The File Manager guide explains editing and saving a file.
Who can run itemban in game
You can use itemban from the Console whenever the server is running. Players can use it in game as /itemban only if their group has the tshock.admin.itemban permission. Keep that to your owner and a few trusted staff, since it lets a player change the rules for everyone.
Test the ban by joining with a normal account that isn't in trustedadmin or owner, then try to use the item. Staff accounts skip the ban and will show you nothing.
