Set up the GT New Horizons modpack server
Run GT New Horizons on a Minecraft 1.7.10 Forge server: switch to Forge 1.7.10 in JAR Manager, then upload the pack's Java 8 server ZIP.
GT New Horizons (GTNH) is a large progression pack for Minecraft 1.7.10, balanced around the GregTech mod. Its CurseForge page describes over 3000 quests, custom world generation and years of recipe changes. The pack's own downloads page offers ready-made server files, and the Modpacks tab can install them from your computer. The one-click CurseForge install is not the route for this pack.
Checked against GT New Horizons 2.8.4 (the Java 8 server ZIP) on Forge 10.13.4.1614 and Minecraft 1.7.10, October 2026.
What the pack needs
- Minecraft 1.7.10 with Forge 10.13.4.1614. The Java 8 server ZIP contains
forge-1.7.10-10.13.4.1614-1.7.10-universal.jar. The panel runs Minecraft 1.7.10 on Java 8 and picks it for you, so you need the Java 8 build of the server files, not the Java 17 to 25 one. The GTNH wiki prefers the Java 17 build for most servers, but the panel sets Java from the Minecraft version, so the Java 8 build is the one that matches. - Memory. The GTNH wiki recommends 6 GB of RAM plus 0.5 GB per extra player in the early game. The server ZIP's own start script uses 6 GB. Your plan sets the RAM, so read how much RAM a Minecraft server needs and check the Minecraft plans before you install.
- Disk space. The Java 8 server ZIP is a download of about 424 MB and unpacks to about 482 MB. The wiki suggests 20 GB or more of storage.
- The exact same version for players. The wiki says the GTNH version must match exactly between every client and the server, so players need 2.8.4.
Why not the CurseForge install
CurseForge's GT New Horizons file has no server pack. It is a client file naming its mods by CurseForge ID. For a Forge 1.7.10 pack the panel's CurseForge install looks for a Forge installer under the wrong folder name and cannot set up the server engine. The pack's own downloads page also lists CurseForge as "Not recommended".
Switch the server to Forge 1.7.10 first
- Open your server and choose JAR Manager under More in the left rail.
- Under Server software, pick Forge. Under Minecraft version, pick 1.7.10.
- Press Apply change. Leave Take a backup first ticked and hold Hold to Confirm & reinstall until it fills. Wait for the install to finish.
For Minecraft 1.7.10 the panel sets the server to Java 8, and the pack install that follows keeps that setting.
Install the server files
- Download
GT_New_Horizons_2.8.4_Server_Java_8.zipfrom the Server ZIPs section of the GTNH downloads page. - Open Modpacks under Content in the left rail. If there is no Install your own pack card, that option is not switched on for your account yet. Contact support and name this pack.
- Drop the ZIP onto the box that says Drop a .mrpack or a server-pack .zip. Nothing installs until you press the install button.
- Leave Take a backup first ticked, then press Install and reinstall and hold the confirm button.
The panel finds forge-1.7.10-10.13.4.1614-1.7.10-universal.jar in the unpacked files and starts the server with it.
First start and whitelist
Press Start on the Console tab. The ZIP ships eula=false, so accept the EULA when the panel asks. The pack's server.properties sets white-list=true, so nobody can join until you add them. Use the Players tab, or run whitelist add <playername> in the Console, as the GTNH wiki shows. How to whitelist players has the steps.
Common problems
- A player cannot join. Check they run GTNH 2.8.4 exactly.
- The server crashes on start. Check JAR Manager still shows Forge 1.7.10. A Java 17 to 25 server ZIP will not start on Java 8.
- The install stops while unpacking. Your plan's disk may be too small. Check Disk Analyser, clear space and install again.
Installing a pack reinstalls your server. If you have a world you care about, keep Take a backup first ticked.
