Set up Coins on your Minecraft server

Install the Coins plugin on Paper or Purpur so mobs and ores drop coins, wire it to Vault, tune drop rules and fix common problems.

Updated 4 min read

Coins by JustEli makes mobs and precious ores drop a coin item that pays out money when a player picks it up. Players can also turn their balance into physical coins with /withdraw, and it can take money on death. It is a plugin for Paper or Purpur, installed from the Plugins tab, and it needs an economy behind it.

Checked against Coins 1.16.4, the latest release on its Modrinth page, which lists Paper 1.21 to 26.3, October 2026. This guide covers Coins 1; a separate Coins 2 is published on SpigotMC and is not covered here.

What you need

  • A Paper or Purpur server on Minecraft 1.21 or newer. Vanilla servers have no Plugins tab; switch software in JAR Manager first (see Change your Minecraft version or mod loader). The plugin's page recommends Paper, because it lets players pick up coins with a full inventory.
  • Vault, and an economy plugin that works with it, such as EssentialsX. See Set up Vault and Set up EssentialsX. Install and start those first.
  • Java 21 or newer, which our panel provides for these Minecraft versions.

Install it

  1. Open the Plugins tab and leave the Modrinth button selected.
  2. Search for Coins. The search also returns other coin and economy plugins, so choose the one by justEli (Modrinth slug coinsplugin). On Hangar the same plugin is listed as Coins by Eli.
  3. Click Install. The tab does not prompt for Vault here, because the Modrinth page lists no dependencies for Coins, so check it yourself.
  4. Use Restart on the Console tab, then run coins version. It prints the version and checks for an update.

First run

The plugin writes plugins/Coins/config.yml, with a locale folder beside it. These defaults decide how it behaves:

  • money-amount pays a random value from 3.00 to 7.00 per coin, and currency-symbol is $.
  • hostile-drop is true and passive-drop is false, so only hostile mobs drop coins.
  • spawner-drop is false, so mobs from spawners drop nothing.
  • drop-chance is 0.90, a 90 percent chance per kill.
  • percentage-player-hit is 0.80, so the player must deal at least 80 percent of the mob's health.
  • limit-for-location is 1 with location-limit-hours at 1.0, so one kill at a spot pays out per hour. This limits grinders.
  • lose-on-death is true, taking 10.00 to 30.00 with money-taken.
  • enable-withdraw is true, and max-withdraw-amount is 10000.00.

Messages use MiniMessage tags such as <blue>. The config says old & colour codes are not supported. Edit the file in File Manager, save, then run coins reload in the Console.

Commands and permissions

  • /withdraw <worth> [amount] turns balance into physical coins. It needs coins.withdraw, which defaults to operators only.
  • /coins reload, /coins settings, /coins version, /coins toggle, /coins drop and /coins remove are admin commands. All except /coins itself default to operators, each under coins.command.<name>.
  • /coins drop <player or x,y,z> <amount> [radius] [worth] scatters coins around a player or spot, which suits drop parties.
  • coins.drop.spawner_mobs and coins.drop.passive_mobs let a player earn from mobs that the config switches off.
  • coins.bypass.location_limit skips the per-location limit.

Common problems

  • No coins drop. Check the mob is hostile, did not come from a spawner, and that you dealt enough of its health to pass percentage-player-hit. Then check the location limit.
  • Picking up a coin pays nothing. The plugin needs Vault and an economy plugin running. Look in the Console for errors from Coins at start.
  • You use a mob stacker. The config says to raise limit-for-location then. See Set up StackMob.
Tip

Back up config.yml before large edits. If a YAML mistake stops the file loading, Find and fix YAML and JSON config errors shows how to spot it.
