Set up EssentialsX on your Minecraft server
Install EssentialsX on Paper or Purpur, add its modules, let players use homes and teleport commands, and tune the main config file.
EssentialsX is a commands plugin for Paper servers (and Purpur, which is built on Paper). It adds homes, warps, kits, teleport requests, private messages, nicknames, moderation tools and a built-in economy. This guide installs the core plugin, explains what the extra modules are and gets ordinary players using the commands.
Checked against EssentialsX 2.22.0 on Paper 26.1.2, October 2026.
What you need
- A Paper or Purpur server. EssentialsX requires CraftBukkit, Spigot or Paper, and Java 8 or higher.
- Optional but recommended: Vault and LuckPerms. The project says Vault is needed for chat prefixes and group support, and recommends LuckPerms for permissions. See Set up Vault on your Minecraft server and Set up LuckPerms on your Minecraft server.
Install the core plugin
- Open Plugins in the Content group of the left rail.
- Search
EssentialsXwith the Modrinth button selected, and click Install. - Restart from the Console tab (use Start there if the server is stopped). The first start creates the
plugins/Essentialsfolder. - Type
pluginsin the command box. EssentialsX should be green.
The core jar holds most commands, signs, kits and the economy, and every module needs it. The modules are separate projects on Modrinth, each with its own Install button: EssentialsX Chat, EssentialsX Spawn, EssentialsX Protect and EssentialsX AntiBuild, among others. See Format chat with EssentialsX Chat on Minecraft and Set up EssentialsX Spawn on your Minecraft server. Keep all the jars on the same version, or you will see version mismatch errors.
Let players use the commands
Most EssentialsX permissions have no default set, so on a server without a permissions plugin only operators can use them. To give everyone the basics with LuckPerms, grant them to the default group in the Console:
lp group default permission set essentials.sethome true
lp group default permission set essentials.home true
lp group default permission set essentials.tpa true
lp group default permission set essentials.tpaccept trueEveryday commands
Settings worth changing
Open plugins/Essentials/config.yml in the File Manager. Restart after you save.
sethome-multiplesets home counts per rank, withdefault: 3out of the box. Players needessentials.sethome.multipleas well as the rank permission, such asessentials.sethome.multiple.vip.teleport-delayandteleport-cooldownare both0seconds. Raise them to slow teleport use.starting-balanceis0andcurrency-symbolis$.- Kits live in
plugins/Essentials/kits.yml.
Common problems
- Your Minecraft version is newer than the release supports. Release 2.22.0 lists Minecraft up to 26.1.2. The project's
2.xbranch also lists 26.2 and 26.3, so on those versions look for a newer stable release on the Modrinth page. The project's wiki also names SpigotMC for stable releases and its downloads page for development builds, which it describes as carrying the latest features and bug fixes. The Plugins tab has no Spigot source, so upload any jar you download from those sites topluginswith the File Manager. - Signs do nothing. Remove the
#from the sign types you want underenabledSignsin the config. - Another plugin's command wins. Add the command name under
overridden-commandsin the config to make EssentialsX take it. If that is not enough, set an alias incommands.ymlthat points the command at theessentials:version, for examplegodtoessentials:god $1-. - Wrong permissions plugin. EssentialsX flags PermissionsEx and GroupManager as unsupported. Use LuckPerms.
Create a backup on the Backups tab before you change plugin versions. For ready-made teleport and home setups, see Add teleport and home commands with EssentialsX.
