Set up EssentialsX Spawn on Minecraft
Install the EssentialsX Spawn module, set the server spawn with /setspawn, choose where new and respawning players land, and fix common clashes.
EssentialsX Spawn is an optional module for EssentialsX. It adds /spawn and /setspawn, and it decides where players appear when they first join and when they respawn after dying. It runs on Paper and Purpur servers, and players install nothing.
Checked against EssentialsX Spawn 2.22.0, built for Minecraft 26.1.2, October 2026.
What you need
- A Paper or Purpur server. Those show a Plugins tab under Content in the panel menu. Switching software is covered in Change Minecraft server version or loader.
- The main EssentialsX plugin. Spawn is a separate jar that cannot run without it. Set up EssentialsX on your Minecraft server covers the core plugin.
- Matching versions. EssentialsX asks you to update every module to the same version, or you get version mismatch errors.
Install the module
- Open Plugins and leave the Modrinth button selected.
- Search for
EssentialsX. The results list the main plugin and each module as its own entry. - Click Install on EssentialsX, then on EssentialsX Spawn.
- Open Console and click Restart, or Start if the server is stopped. Restart the server to load a new plugin.
If Install says there is no build for your Minecraft version, the project has not listed that version yet. Set Game version to Any version, install, and read the Console for errors on the next start. A build made for an older Minecraft may refuse to load.
Set the spawn point
Spawn needs a position, so run these in game as an operator. Whitelist players and set operators shows how to make one from the Players tab.
- Stand where you want players to appear.
- Type
/setspawn. - Type
/spawnfrom somewhere else to check it works.
To give one permission group its own spawn, add the group name: /setspawn <group>. /spawn <player> sends another player there.
Choose who lands where
The settings live in plugins/Essentials/config.yml, in the File Manager, in the section headed EssentialsX Spawn + New Players. These are the keys and their defaults:
Click Save, then restart. Changes to respawn-listener-priority and spawn-join-listener-priority apply only after a restart.
Let your players use it
Give players these permission nodes with a permissions plugin: essentials.spawn for /spawn, essentials.spawn.others for /spawn <player>, and essentials.setspawn for /setspawn. With LuckPerms, this console command lets everyone use /spawn:
lp group default permission set essentials.spawn trueSet up LuckPerms on your Minecraft server covers groups. Staff who should skip the join teleport can have essentials.spawn-on-join.exempt.
If it does not work
- Players keep landing in the wrong place. Another plugin may handle respawns too. With Multiverse-Core, Multiverse's own FAQ names EssentialsX as a common cause. Set
respawn-listener-prioritytolowestand restart. - The commands are unknown. Check Installed in the Plugins tab: both EssentialsX and EssentialsX Spawn must be listed and enabled.
- New players receive items you did not choose. The default
newbies.kitistools, a kit given on a first join. Set it to''to give nothing.
