Set up the Beyond Depth modpack server

Install Beyond Depth on a Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge server from its CurseForge client file, with 15 mods to download by hand.

Updated 6 min read

Beyond Depth is a Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1 by blueversal. Its CurseForge page describes more than 400 mods, over 35 bosses, new dimensions such as the Undergarden and Voidscape, and tougher combat. The author publishes no server pack, so the Modpacks tab builds the server from the pack's client file instead. That works, but you download 15 of the mods by hand.

Checked against Beyond Depth Ver13.0.3 (the CurseForge file dated 18 October 2026) on Forge 47.4.22 and Minecraft 1.20.1, October 2026.

What to expect

The author's page gives a manual server guide for people running it on their own computer. It tells you to install Forge 47.4.22, copy the config, kubejs, default config and mods folders from the client, delete a list of client-only mods, and then turn on flight and turn off the tick time limit. It adds that on a hosting service you are on your own. The page's licence says you may host a server with the pack. The panel does the copying for you and turns the client-only mods off, so this guide covers the 15 downloads and the two settings.

What the pack needs

  • Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge 47.4.22. The pack's manifest.json pins that Forge build, and the install sets it up. The panel picks Java 17 for this version.
  • Memory. The pack's own file list recommends about 8 GB (8416 MB), and the page recommends 8 GB for players with a 4 GB minimum. On an 8 GB plan the server booted, but the RAM Usage card read 8.4 GB of 8 GB once it was idle, so treat 8 GB as the least. Read how much RAM a Minecraft server needs and check the Minecraft plans before you install.
  • Disk space. After the install the server used about 1.5 GB, and its mods folder came to about 1.1 GB.
  • Mods you download by hand. When this guide was checked, 15 of the pack's mods only allow downloads from CurseForge's own site, including Structory, Ender Dragon Loot and Blaze Gear. The install popup lists them and asks you to download each one and drop it in. Modpack mods to download from CurseForge covers that step.
  • The same pack version for players. The server runs Ver13.0.3. The page says not to update any mods and not to add Optifine.

Install the pack

  1. Open your server and choose Modpacks under Content in the left rail.
  2. Choose the CurseForge chip in the source chip row at the top of the tab, then search for Beyond Depth. Similar names appear in the same results, such as Beyond Depth Insanity, so check that the author is blueversal.
  3. Press Install on Beyond Depth. The popup says it reinstalls your server with the pack and names Forge and Minecraft 1.20.1. It first shows "Checking which of the pack's mods we can download for you", then lists the ones you need to download. Wait for that line to clear before you hold the button in step 7.
  4. Download each listed mod from its CurseForge page and drop the file in the popup, one at a time. Wait for the row to read Added before you drop the next, because a file dropped while the last one is still being checked can be lost. Leave Install without them unticked, since the pack depends on them. It disappears once all 15 are added. Any you leave out are listed on the Modpacks tab under the installed pack, where you can drop them in after the install.
  5. If the popup offers a version dropdown, leave it on Newest that fits your server.
  6. Leave Take a backup first ticked. Your current world is replaced by the pack's. Leave Start the server when it's ready unticked, so you can set the two options below before the first start.
  7. Hold Install and reinstall until it fills, then wait for the install to finish. The popup is tall with 15 rows, so on a short screen the button can sit below the visible window.

The install took about three minutes once the backup and popup checks were done. Its console lines say it downloaded the pack's 464 mods and added the 15 you dropped in.

Client-only mods turn off by themselves

The pack carries mods that only run on a player's computer, such as Embeddium and Oculus. You do not delete these by hand. The install renames them with .disabled on the end, and the console reports it, for example "72 client-only mod(s) turned off". It keeps a client-side mod on when a server mod needs it, and says so: "2 client-side mod(s) kept on because a server mod requires them". On Ver13.0.3 those two were SimplyTooltips, which Simply Bows needs, and radiantgear, which Curious Lanterns needs.

To see them, open the Mods tab. A turned-off mod shows a Disabled badge and an Enable button. A mod that is on shows Disable.

Two settings, then the first start

The pack ships no server.properties, so the install writes a short one and the Config Editor fills in the defaults for everything else.

  1. Open the Config Editor. Turn on Allow flight under Gameplay, and set Watchdog timeout (ms) under Performance to -1. These are the author's flight and tick time steps. Press Save changes on each section you change.
  2. Press Start on the Console tab. If the EULA has not been accepted yet, the panel asks you to accept it first. The server is up when the console prints a line containing For help, type. On an 8 GB plan the first start took about two and a half minutes, because the server loads 468 mods.

The author adds that some rare issues may need the Long NBT Killer mod on the server.

Your address is in the left rail under Server address. Connect to your server for the first time covers adding it in Minecraft.

Common problems

  • A player cannot join. Check they run Ver13.0.3 on Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge, then compare their mod list with the server's mods folder.
  • The server crashes at boot. The Mods tab marks a mod that failed with a Failed to load badge and a Disable button. Disable it and start again.
  • The server lags. Watch the RAM Usage card on the Console tab and the TPS reading in the left rail. Why is my server lagging has more.
  • The install says it could not start a backup. Every backup slot on your plan is full and protected. Open Backups, remove protection from one or delete one, then install again.
  • The install stops. Your plan's disk may be too small. Check Disk Analyser, clear space and install again.
Warning

Installing a pack reinstalls your server. If you have a world you care about, keep Take a backup first ticked.
