Set Up Automatic Storage Chests in Terraria
Use wired chests that collect drops, Quick and Similar Stack to nearby chests, and crafting from nearby chests in Terraria.
Terraria has no single "auto storage" switch, but 1.4.5 gave chests three features that get close to one. A chest can now collect dropped items by itself when it gets a wire signal, you can stack your inventory into every chest nearby, and crafting can draw from those chests. This guide shows how to use each one on PC.
Checked against Terraria 1.4.5.8 on PC, October 2026.
Make a chest collect dropped items
Since 1.4.5, when a chest receives a wire signal it picks up the dropped items near it. Re-Logic's launch notes list this under Wiring and Mechanisms and call it great for automated farms. The wiki adds that the chest sorts its contents after a pickup, and that it won't do this while a player has the chest open.
To set one up:
- Place the chest where your farm's drops land.
- Run wire from a trigger to the chest. The wiki lists the Pressure Plate, Timer, Switch and Lever among the triggers. Each coloured Wrench places wire of its own colour, and the Wire Cutter removes wire you placed by mistake.
- Fire the trigger. Choose one that suits the farm: a Pressure Plate that something steps on, a Timer, or a Switch or Lever you use yourself.
Close the chest before the signal fires. Per the wiki, a chest that a player has open doesn't collect.
Stack your inventory into nearby chests
According to the wiki, Quick Stack to Nearby Chests looks through your inventory and moves any item that already exists in a nearby chest into that chest. The wiki says 1.4.5 added Similar Stack to Nearby Chests, which does the same and also tries to store similar items together, such as ores with ores.
Re-Logic's 1.4.5.6 hotfix fixed quick stack ignoring full stacks and different item prefixes, so keep your game on the latest version if a stack goes into the wrong chest.
Craft from nearby chests
The crafting menu has a Craft from nearby chests option that you can switch on or off. With it on, recipes use materials stored in chests close to you, so you don't have to run back to fetch ingredients. Turn it off in the crafting menu if you would rather recipes left your chests alone.
Putting it together
A simple base layout uses all three features:
- A wired collection chest at the farm, fired by a Timer.
- Storage chests near your crafting area, so Quick Stack and the crafting option can reach them.
- A habit of pressing Similar Stack when you walk in.
Chests belong to the world, so everything here works the same on your server as it does in single player. If you are moving a base you built on your PC, see Upload a Terraria world to your server, or start from Terraria getting started.
The wiki's pages on Chests and Wire list further details: Chests.
