Install GmodAdminSuite on Your GMod Server

Install the free GmodAdminSuite Workshop addon and its config addon, edit the Lua config files, and leave storage on its default.

Updated 4 min read

GmodAdminSuite (GAS) is a free Workshop addon that sits on top of an admin mod such as ULX or SAM. It adds a player database, a custom command manager, an FPS booster and secondary usergroups, and it is the base that Billy's paid GmodStore addons plug into, including Billy's Logs and Billy's Whitelist. This guide installs GAS and its separate config addon, and leaves everything at its default storage.

GAS has two parts: the addon itself, which comes from the Workshop, and a small config addon, which you upload by hand.

Add GmodAdminSuite to your Workshop collection

  1. Open the GmodAdminSuite page on the Steam Workshop and add it to your server's Steam collection.
  2. In your server's Workshop tab, press Restart now so the server downloads it. If you haven't linked a collection yet, Add a Steam Workshop collection to your GMod server walks through it.

The Players get the addons tile on the Workshop tab shows whether joining players get the same list. The config addon you add below also has a GAS.Config.WorkshopDL setting, on by default, that sends GAS's sounds and materials to joining players through the Workshop.

Add the config addon

GAS keeps its settings in a second addon, GmodAdminSuite-Config, from the GmodAdminSuite GitHub organisation.

  1. On the GmodAdminSuite-Config repository, download the repository as a zip.
  2. In the File Manager, open garrysmod/addons and upload the zip. Click it and use Extract here, then delete the zip.
  3. The extracted folder is called GmodAdminSuite-Config-master. Rename it to gmodadminsuite-config. The repository's instructions say the name must be lowercase characters only.
  4. Restart the server from the Console tab.

Edit the config files

Open garrysmod/addons/gmodadminsuite-config/lua. The repository's README says to read each file and configure it. These are the files:

  • gmodadminsuite_config.lua: GAS.Config.ChatCommand is the chat command that opens the GAS menu, !gas by default. GAS.Config.AFKTime is the seconds before an idle player is marked AFK, 300 by default.
  • gmodadminsuite_steam_apikey.lua: paste a Steam Web API key from steamcommunity.com/dev/apikey between the quotes of GAS.SteamAPI.Config.APIKey. GAS uses it to look up Steam names and avatars. The file says it is never sent to players.
  • gmodadminsuite_mysql_config.lua: leave GAS.Config.MySQL.Enabled = false. With it off, GAS stores its data in the server's local (SQLite) database, which is what you want here.
  • gmodadminsuite_lua_functions.lua: optional custom Lua functions. You can leave it as it is.
  • openpermissions_config.lua: OpenPermissions settings. It sets who counts as an Operator, and the file says Operators have maximum permissions. See the warning below.
  • openpermissions_lua_functions.lua: optional custom Lua functions that OpenPermissions can use as access groups. You can leave it as it is.

Keep the last line of each file, return true, since the files say deleting it breaks the config.

Warning

In openpermissions_config.lua, OpenPermissions.Operators.SteamIDs ships holding two Steam IDs that belong to the addon's author. Operators get maximum permissions on your server, so replace those two IDs with your own SteamID or SteamID64 before the server goes public.

Warning

MySQL storage isn't available on our plans. Leave the MySQL file alone and don't enter database details in it.

Most of GAS is configured in game, not in these files. Join the server and type !gas to open its menu. Its own FAQ says OpenPermissions, GAS's permission system, comes bundled with it, so don't install it separately.

Add a Billy's addon

With GAS in place, you can install a Billy's addon from the GmodStore tab. Each one also needs the XEON DRM module. See Install XEON DRM on a GMod server, then pick one, such as Billy's Logs.

Common problems

  1. The config doesn't seem to apply. The folder must be named gmodadminsuite-config, in lowercase characters only. Check the name in garrysmod/addons.
  2. No admin mod. GAS works on top of ULX, SAM and similar, so it expects one. See GMod ULX admin commands.
  3. Steam names and avatars are missing. The API key file says GAS needs your Steam API key to look them up. Fill it in as above.

Checked against the GmodAdminSuite Workshop item and its GmodAdminSuite-Config repository on GitHub, October 2026. The config repository's last commit is dated 3 July 2020.
