Find Addons for Your GMod Server

Where to look for Garry's Mod addons: the Steam Workshop, GmodStore and folder downloads, and how each one reaches your server.

Updated 4 min read

Garry's Mod addons turn up in three places: the Steam Workshop, GmodStore, and download sites that hand out a plain folder. Each one reaches your server a different way. This guide covers where to look and how each source connects to the panel.

The Steam Workshop

The Workshop is where most addons live, and it is the easiest source to use on a server. Browse the Garry's Mod Workshop at steamcommunity.com/app/4000/workshop. The wiki says addons "can add various new content to your game", including vehicles, weapons, models, tools and NPCs.

The Workshop sorts items by three kinds of filter, and the Workshop tab in your panel shows them on each addon in the same order:

  • Content type: Addon, Save, Dupe or Demo.
  • Addon type: Effects, Gamemode, Map, Model, NPC, Server content, Tool, Vehicle or Weapon.
  • Tags: Build, Cartoon, Comic, Fun, Movie, Realism, Roleplay, Scenic or Water.

Filter by Gamemode or Map to find a whole new way to play. Server content is the type creators pick for a pack of files that a server shares with its players.

You don't install Workshop addons one at a time. Put the ones you want in a Workshop collection, set it to Public or Unlisted, and link it in the Workshop tab. The server downloads everything in it when it starts. Add a Steam Workshop collection to your GMod server walks through it.

GmodStore

GmodStore is a separate marketplace for scripts, and the panel has a GmodStore tab for it. Once you connect your GmodStore account, the tab lets you "Install, update and remove the addons you've bought". Disconnecting only removes your saved token, and addons you installed stay on the server.

Some scripts sold there need the XEON DRM module, a Linux file called gmsv_xeon_drm_linux.dll. If an addon you installed needs it and it is missing, the tab asks for it and takes the file from you. It goes into garrysmod/lua/bin, and you restart the server afterwards.

Download sites

Some authors publish an addon as a folder on their own site instead of the Workshop. The wiki says addons "can also be downloaded from 3rd party websites in the form of a folder", which then goes into the garrysmod/addons folder. Upload custom addons to your GMod server shows how.

Choosing what to add

  • Check what it is for. A Workshop item's type tells you whether it is a gamemode, a map or a tool before you add it.
  • Read the item's page. The description is where an author says what the addon needs to work. If it relies on another addon, add both.
  • Keep the list short. Players need the addons' content on their own computer, so every addon they have to download adds to how long joining takes. If an addon is only for you as the admin, press Disable on its row in the Workshop tab: the server still loads it, and joining players skip it from the next restart.
  • Match your gamemode. The Gamemode presets card on the Startup tab sets the gamemode and a matching map in one go for Sandbox, Trouble in Terrorist Town and DarkRP.
Warning

An addon is code that runs on your server. The wiki warns that a Workshop addon can be "updated to contain malicious or otherwise unwanted changes". Only add addons from authors you trust, and use a backup before big changes.

After you have added something

Restart the server so it loads the change, then watch the Console for errors on the way up. The Errors filter above the log shows only the error lines. If the server runs a gamemode, make sure Gamemode in the Startup tab matches the gamemode's folder name.
