Add YUNG's Better Ocean Monuments
Install YUNG's Better Ocean Monuments and YUNG's API from the Mods tab, find the new monuments, and set the vanilla monument option.
YUNG's Better Ocean Monuments redesigns the ocean monument. Its page says the new monuments are much larger than vanilla ones, have randomised layouts, and hold better loot, including Tridents and a Heart of the Sea. It works on world generation, so the install is one mod plus its library. This guide adds it from the Mods tab.
Checked against YUNG's Better Ocean Monuments 4.1.2 with YUNG's API 5.1.9 on NeoForge 1.21.1, October 2026. That is the 1.21.1 line, not the newest. Modrinth's latest builds are 5.1.1 of the mod and 6.1.3 of YUNG's API, both for Minecraft 26.1.1 and 26.1.2 (10 September 2026). On a 26.1.2 server the steps are the same and the store picks those builds, but the config file name and the /locate id below were checked on 1.21.1 only.
What it needs
- A mod loader. Modrinth lists Fabric, Forge and NeoForge builds for Minecraft 1.21.1. Forge builds stop at 1.21.1. NeoForge and Fabric continue to 1.21.4 and then 26.1.1 and 26.1.2.
- YUNG's API. Every build for 1.20 and newer lists it as required. On Fabric the mod also lists Fabric API and Cloth Config as required. The store's prompt names these for you.
- Players. Modrinth lists the mod's client side as unsupported and its server side as required, but lists YUNG's API as required on both. That leaves open whether a player needs either one, so test a join from a game that has neither before you tell people to skip them.
Switch the server to a mod loader
Skip this if the server already runs Fabric, Forge or NeoForge.
- Open JAR Manager under More in the left rail.
- Set Server software to NeoForge and Minecraft version to 1.21.1.
- Press Apply change, leave Take a backup first ticked, and hold Confirm & reinstall until it fills. The panel warns that your world is kept but configuration files may be reset, so keep the backup. If mods already on the server have no build for the new loader or version, the box lists them and ticks an option to disable the ones that won't run (kept, not deleted). The button reads Switch anyway only if you untick it.
Change your Minecraft version or mod loader covers the tab in full.
Install the mod
- Open the Mods tab under Content in the left rail.
- In the Store view, leave Modrinth selected and search for
YUNG's Better Ocean Monuments. - Press Install. A box titled "Needs 1 more add-on" lists YUNG's API. Press Install all (2).
- Restart the server from the Console tab. The toast after the install says "Restart the server to load them."
See the new monuments
Look for the new design in ocean you have not explored yet.
The mod's biome list covers deep oceans. To find one, run this in game as an operator:
/locate structure betteroceanmonuments:ocean_monumentLocating needs operator level 2. Whitelist players and set operators shows how to make an operator.
Vanilla monuments
The NeoForge config file has a [General] section with a key named "Disable Vanilla Ocean Monuments" (in quotes), and its default is true. Set it to false to keep vanilla monuments. The file sits in the config folder and is named for the loader and Minecraft version, for example betteroceanmonuments-neoforge-1_21.toml on NeoForge 1.21.1. Stop the server, edit the file in File Manager, and start again. The setting is marked as needing a world restart.
Common problems
- The mod did not load. In Mods, Installed, a "Failed to load" badge means it did not start. Check that YUNG's API is listed under Installed too. Find and read a crash report helps name the cause.
- No new monument near spawn. Explore new ocean.
- A player cannot join. Check they run the same Minecraft version and loader.
Back up the world before you add a world generation mod. Create and restore backups shows how.
