Add Waystones to your Minecraft server

Install Waystones and Balm from the Mods tab, fix spawn protection for players, and change the waystones-common.toml settings.

Updated 4 min read

Waystones is a mod by BlayTheNinth that adds waystone blocks players can return to once they have activated them. Its page suggests it as an alternative to /warp and /home commands on multiplayer servers. This guide installs it from the Mods tab and covers the settings a server owner usually changes.

Checked against Waystones 21.1.46 on NeoForge 1.21.1, October 2026. This is the 1.21.1 line; Fabric and NeoForge builds also exist for 26.1.2 to 26.3.

What it needs

  • A mod loader. Modrinth lists Fabric, Forge and NeoForge builds for Minecraft 1.21.1. For 26.1.2, 26.2 and 26.3 it lists Fabric and NeoForge builds only.
  • Balm. The mod's page says Balm must be installed alongside it. On Minecraft 26.1 and above it also needs Shogi, and Modrinth lists Fabric API as required on Fabric. The store's prompt names these for you.
  • The mod on every player's game. Modrinth marks both the client and server sides as required.

Switch the server to a mod loader

Skip this if the server already runs Fabric, Forge or NeoForge.

  1. Open JAR Manager under More in the left rail.
  2. Set Server software to NeoForge and Minecraft version to 1.21.1.
  3. Press Apply change, leave Take a backup first ticked, and hold Confirm & reinstall until it fills. The panel warns that your world is kept but configuration files may be reset, so keep the backup. If mods already on the server have no build for the new loader or version, the box lists them and ticks an option to disable the ones that won't run (kept, not deleted). The button reads Switch anyway only if you untick it.

Change your Minecraft version or mod loader covers the tab in full.

Install the mod

  1. Open the Mods tab under Content in the left rail.
  2. In the Store view, leave Modrinth selected and search for Waystones. Add-ons for Waystones appear in the same results, so pick the one named Waystones.
  3. Press Install. A box titled "Needs 1 more add-on" lists Balm. Press Install all (2).
  4. Restart the server from the Console tab. The panel does not restart it for you.

Let players use the waystones

Waystones can disappear or refuse to work for players who are not operators when they sit inside the spawn protection area. The mod's FAQ says this is Minecraft's own rule. Open the Config Editor, go to the World section, and lower Spawn protection (blocks) or move the waystone outside it. Then press Save changes and restart.

The /waystones commands default to operator level, so run them in game as an operator. Whitelist players and set operators shows how to make one. The main ones are:

  • /waystones activate <targets> <pos> and /waystones forget <targets> <pos> turn a waystone on or off for chosen players.
  • /waystones place <pos> <type> <name> places a waystone with a name.
  • /waystones list <player> lists the waystones a player placed, and /waystones count <player> counts those they placed or activated.

Change the settings

The settings live in config/waystones-common.toml. Stop the server, edit the file in File Manager, then start again. These come from the 1.21.1 docs:

  • defaultVisibility under [general] is ACTIVATION by default. Set GLOBAL or TEAM to make newly placed or found waystones use that visibility by default.
  • allowEveryoneToManageGlobalWaystones is false by default.
  • enableCosts under [teleports] is true by default, which makes teleports cost XP. Set it to false for free teleports.
  • chunksBetweenWildWaystones under [worldGen] is 25. Set 0 to stop waystones generating in the wild. spawnInVillages takes DISABLED, REGULAR or FREQUENT.
  • inventoryButton is empty, which means off, by default. It takes NONE, NEAREST, ANY, or the name of a waystone, with the capitals as written.

The 26.x builds are organised differently, so use the mod's 26.1 docs for those.

Common problems

  • A waystone disappears when placed. Check spawn protection first. The FAQ also says this happens when the mod is not properly installed, and Waystones needs the server to run Forge, Fabric or NeoForge.
  • No waystones in villages. The FAQ says they only generate in vanilla villages or villages from supported mods.
  • The mod did not load. In Mods, Installed, a "Failed to load" badge means it did not start. Find and read a crash report helps name the cause.
  • A player cannot join. Check they run the same Minecraft version, loader and Waystones build.

The full docs are on the Waystones page.

Tip

Back up the world before you change world generation settings. Create and restore backups shows how.
