Install Dave's Potioneering on your server
Install Dave's Potioneering 13 on a Forge 1.20.1 server from CurseForge with GeckoLib, then set potion stack sizes and cooldowns.
Dave's Potioneering changes how potions work rather than adding more of them. Potions stack, splash potions throw much further, brewing is more efficient, weapons can be coated, and milk comes in bottles. SoterDave makes the mod, and it works with potions added by other mods. The mod is needed on the server and on every player's game.
Checked against the Dave's Potioneering 13 listing and jar for Forge 1.20.1, October 2026.
Pick the server version
CurseForge has the newest builds. Build 13 for 1.20.1 came out on 4 July 2025 for both Forge and Fabric. The mod's own file asks for Forge 47.0.0 or newer and Minecraft 1.20 up to, but not including, 1.21. Older Forge and Fabric builds exist for 1.19.2, 1.18.2 and 1.16.5. The Modrinth listing is behind, so use the CurseForge source here.
To run Forge 1.20.1, open JAR Manager under More, set Server software to Forge and Minecraft version to 1.20.1, then press Apply change. Leave Take a backup first ticked, then press and hold Confirm & reinstall for 3 seconds. The panel picks Java 17 for 1.20.1 for you. Change your Minecraft version or mod loader has the full steps.
What it needs
The mod needs GeckoLib, version 1.20.1-4.2 or newer. The mod file marks GeckoLib as checked on the client side, and Modrinth lists it as required with the server side optional. Players need it. For the server, the mod file does not check for it and Modrinth calls it optional, but the install window below offers it, so accept it.
Install it
- Open Mods under Content and select the CurseForge chip. The Game version filter starts on your server's version.
- Search for
Dave's Potioneeringand press Install. A window titled "Needs 1 more add-on" offers GeckoLib. Press Install all (2). The mod is saved asDaves Potioneering-forge-1.20.1-13.jar, without the apostrophe. - Restart from the Console tab.
Open the Installed view afterwards. Dave's Potioneering and GeckoLib should show with no Failed to load badge.
Players need it too
Each player installs Dave's Potioneering 13 and GeckoLib for Forge 1.20.1. Join a modded server from your launcher covers the player side, and Fix the mismatched mod channel list error explains the refusal when versions differ.
Server settings
The first start creates davespotioneering-server.toml in the serverconfig folder inside your world folder (world/serverconfig). Stop the server before you edit it in the File Manager. Its [general] section holds:
potion_stack_size(16),splash_potion_stack_size(4) andlingering_potion_stack_size(4) set how many of each potion type stack, from 1 to 64.potion_switch_cooldownandpotion_throw_cooldown(both 30) are cooldowns in ticks for switching to a potion and throwing one.coating_uses(25) is the number of uses per weapon coating.
On that first start the console warns that the file "is not correct" and corrects it. That is the mod writing its defaults, not an error.
The author tracks every exact value on a public Trello board, linked from the Modrinth page, rather than a wiki.
Common problems
- The server stops at startup: open the Console. The mod file asks for Forge 47.0.0 or newer and Minecraft 1.20 up to 1.21, so check the server runs Forge 1.20.1 first. Fix mod and plugin errors on Minecraft covers reading the log.
- The first start stops with
Exit code: 137andOut of memory: true: the server ran out of memory. In our check on the 1 GB Grass plan the first start did this, then the server restarted by itself and reachedDone. If it happens every time, the server needs more memory: our plans list mods from 3 GB. Fix Minecraft Java exit codes explains the code. - The store shows no Forge file: check the Game version is 1.20.1 and the Loader filter matches your server. Modrinth's list has no Forge 1.20.1 build, so stay on CurseForge.
- A player cannot join: check their game matches the mod, GeckoLib and Forge version named under "Players need it too".
