Set up a Peace of Mind server
Install the quest-based Peace of Mind modpack for Minecraft 1.12.2 from the Modpacks tab with its server zip, then whitelist yourself and start.
Peace of Mind is a quest-based, beginner-friendly Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.12.2, built for Peaceful difficulty by TooGoodMules and chunked_element. Its CurseForge page describes a quest book with over 250 quests that guide players through mostly magic and low-tech mods, aimed at people who are new to modded Minecraft. You install the server from the Modpacks tab, using the pack's own server zip.
Checked against Peace of Mind 2.1.3 on Forge 14.23.5.2859 and Minecraft 1.12.2, October 2026.
What the pack needs
- Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge 14.23.5.2859. The server zip includes
forge-1.12.2-14.23.5.2859.jar, and the panel launches it. For Minecraft 1.12.2 the panel runs Java 8 on its own. - Memory. The pack page recommends 4 to 6 GB of RAM for a server, depending on the player load, and the pack's
Linux_launch.shuses-Xmx4G. Your plan sets the RAM, so see how much RAM a Minecraft server needs and the Minecraft plans. - Disk space. The server zip is about 225 MB and unpacks to about 254 MB. The zip sits on your plan's disk while it unpacks, so keep room for both.
- The same pack version for players. This guide installs 2.1.3, the newest file on CurseForge, released on 14 December 2021 as a security update. Players need that version in the CurseForge app.
Install the server files
Installing a modpack reinstalls the server and replaces the current world, so use a new server or one you can wipe.
- Open Backups under Essentials and press Create backup if the server holds anything you want to keep.
- Open Modpacks under Content in the left rail.
- Press the CurseForge source button, then search for
Peace of Mind. Other packs with similar names appear in the results, so check the row for Peace of Mind by TooGoodMules. - Press Install on that row. The popup says it reinstalls your server and names Forge and Minecraft 1.12.2.
- Leave Take a backup first ticked. Tick Start the server when it's ready if you want the server to start itself, and tick I agree to the Minecraft EULA if the popup shows it.
- Press and hold Hold to Install and reinstall until it fills, then watch the Console tab until it reads Minecraft is installed. Press Start whenever you are ready. If you ticked Start the server when it's ready, the server starts itself about a minute later.
First start
If you did not tick Start the server when it's ready, press Start on the Console tab. The pack's own eula.txt already says eula=true, so the panel starts the server without opening the EULA prompt. The server is up when the console prints a line containing For help, type.
The pack ships a server.properties with white-list=true, so only whitelisted players and server operators can join. Open Players under Essentials and stay on the first tab, which reads Players while the whitelist is off and Whitelist once it is on. Press Add, which opens the Add to whitelist window, add your Minecraft name, and add anyone who will play. If the button at the top reads Turn whitelist on, press it once the list is ready. Whitelist players and set operators walks through it, and also shows how to make yourself an operator.
The same file sets difficulty=0, which minecraft.wiki lists as peaceful, and player-idle-timeout=30, which is Idle kick (minutes) in Config Editor and removes players who sit idle for 30 minutes. Your address is in the left rail under Server address, and Connect to your server for the first time covers adding it in Minecraft.
Update the quest book
The pack's own server notes tell admins to run two commands as an operator once the server has loaded, to bring the quest book and the loot database up to the pack's version: bq_admin default load and bqs_loot default load. The notes write them with a leading slash, and the Console takes them without one. The first answers Reloaded default quest database and the second answers Reloaded default loot database.
Common problems
- A player cannot join. Check they are on the whitelist and run Peace of Mind 2.1.3 on Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge.
- The console stops at a prompt after you install over an old world. The pack's notes say to type
fml confirmin the console, wait a few minutes while the server backs up the old world, and loading carries on. - The install says it could not start a backup. Every install's backup is protected, so once all your backup slots hold protected backups the next install stops with
Couldn't start a backup. Free a backup slot, or untick the backup and try again.Free a slot under Backups, then install again. - The install stops while unpacking. Your plan's disk may be too small. Check Disk Analyser, clear space and install again. Server out of disk space shows how.
- The server crashes at boot. Find and read a crash report shows how to name the mod at fault.
Installing a pack replaces the server's current files and world. Keep Take a backup first ticked.
