Add Mowzie's Mobs to your server
Add Mowzie's Mobs to a Forge 1.20.1 or NeoForge 1.21.1 server from the Mods tab, with GeckoLib, then restart and find its mobs.
Mowzie's Mobs is a mod by BobMowzie and a team of contributors that adds fantasy creatures and bosses to Minecraft, with their own AI and fluid animations. Its Modrinth page lists the Foliaath, Ferrous Wroughtnaut, Frostmaw, Grottol, Naga, Umvuthana, the Sculptor and others. You add it to a Forge or NeoForge server from the Mods tab, and players install it too.
Checked against Mowzie's Mobs 1.8.2 with GeckoLib 4.8.4 on Forge 1.20.1, October 2026. The NeoForge 1.21.1 build (Mowzie's Mobs 1.8.2 with GeckoLib 4.9.3) is read from Modrinth and was not run on a test server.
What it needs
- Forge or NeoForge. The current builds are for Minecraft 1.20.1 on Forge (Forge 47.1.3 or newer) and Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge (NeoForge 21.1). The mod's FAQ says there is no Fabric or Quilt port. A Paper or Vanilla server has no Mods tab, so switch the software first with Change your Minecraft version or mod loader.
- GeckoLib. Both builds list it as a required dependency, version 4.4.2 or newer on Forge 1.20.1 and 4.8.3 or newer on NeoForge 1.21.1. The panel offers to install it with the mod.
- The same mod for players. Modrinth marks Mowzie's Mobs as required on both the client and the server, and GeckoLib as required on the client.
Install it
- Open Mods under Content in the left rail. On Paper the same tab is called Plugins, but this mod does not run there.
- In the Store view, check that the Modrinth source button is selected, then search for
Mowzie's Mobs. Pick the result by BobMowzie, since other add-ons for it have similar names. The tab filters to your server's Minecraft version and loader. - Press Install.
- The popup titled Needs 1 more add-on names GeckoLib. Press Install all (2) to add both.
- The toast says the files were added to your
/modsfolder and that the server needs a restart. Open Console and press Restart. - Switch the Mods tab to Installed and check that Mowzie's Mobs and GeckoLib are listed without a Failed to load or Needs badge.
On Modrinth the mod's builds cover Minecraft 1.20.1 and 1.21.1. CurseForge lists earlier builds as well, for example for Minecraft 1.19.2, 1.18.2 and 1.16.5 on Forge, so press the CurseForge source button if your server runs one of those.
Config
After the first start, look in the config folder for mowziesmobs-common.toml. Open it in File Manager and restart after any change.
Finding the mobs
The Modrinth page says where each creature lives: Foliaath in jungles, Frostmaw in snowy areas, Grottol deep underground in caves, Lanterns in roofed forests, Naga on coastal cliffs, and Umvuthana in the savanna. The mod's FAQ says the mobs use biome tags, so they spawn in modded biomes that are tagged correctly. It also says that if you add the mod to an existing world, you have to travel to new chunks to meet the Wroughtnaut and the Frostmaw, because they spawn as structures during world generation.
Common problems
- The Mods tab is missing. The server runs Vanilla or Paper. Switch to Forge or NeoForge in JAR Manager.
- No build shows up for your version. Check the Minecraft version and loader in the filters, and try the CurseForge source.
- A player cannot join. They need Mowzie's Mobs and GeckoLib in the same versions. Under Installed, Export for players zips the mods players need.
- The server crashes at boot. Find and read a crash report shows how to name the mod at fault.
Back up first with Create backup under Backups. If you have no recent backup, the Mods tab stops with a No backup yet prompt before it installs.
