Use the Discord Chat Plugin on Rust

Link Rust chat to a Discord channel: make a bot, add the Discord extension, install Discord Chat and set the token and channel.

Updated 5 min read

Discord Chat links your server's chat to a Discord channel. What players type in game appears in the channel, and what people type in the channel appears in game. It can also post when players join and leave, and when the server boots, comes online or shuts down. It needs a Discord bot of your own, so most of this guide is the setup around the plugin. It covers the bot, the Discord extension the plugin depends on, the plugin itself and its settings.

Checked against Discord Chat 3.0.6 by MJSU on uMod (released 25 March 2025) and the Discord extension 3.1.7 (released 20 March 2025), October 2026. The extension's own README describes it as an Oxide extension. Carbon's docs don't cover the Oxide Discord extension, so use Oxide for this plugin. The only thing Carbon's porting page says about Oxide extensions (files named Oxide.Ext.*.dll) is that they go in carbon/extensions instead of Managed.

Step 1: make a Discord bot

Discord's own developer documentation covers this. In short:

  1. Sign in to the Discord Developer Portal and create a new application.
  2. Open the Bot page. Under Token, press Reset Token to make a bot token, and copy it straight away. Discord says you can't view a token again unless you regenerate it.
  3. On the same Bot page, switch on the privileged intents. The plugin asks Discord for the server members and message content intents, so turn on Server Members Intent and Message Content Intent.
  4. Open Installation, and under Default Install Settings for Guild Install, add the bot scope and a permission such as Send Messages. Copy the Install Link, open it in your browser, choose Add to server and pick your Discord server.
  5. Find the channel's ID. In Discord, open User Settings, go to the Advanced tab and switch on Developer Mode, which Discord's developer docs say exposes resource IDs such as channels. Then right-click the channel and choose Copy Channel ID.
Warning

The bot token is a password. Anyone who has it can control your bot. Never post it in a channel or share a screenshot of it. If it leaks, press Reset Token again.

Step 2: the Discord extension

Discord Chat does not work alone. It is built on the Discord extension, a file called Oxide.Ext.Discord.dll. Download the latest release from the extension's uMod page. The extension's README says to copy the file into the server's Managed folder, which is RustDedicated_Data/Managed, and restart the server. That is the README's instruction for Oxide, not something we have tested on our servers. To follow it, in the File Manager, open RustDedicated_Data, then Managed, and Upload the file there. Then Restart the server.

Step 3: install the plugin

Open the Plugins tab, search the Store for DiscordChat and press Install. How to install Oxide/uMod plugins on your Rust server has the steps. A plugin installed onto a running Oxide server stays unloaded until you Restart the server or type oxide.load DiscordChat in the Console. On Carbon it loads by itself, and c.load DiscordChat or c.reload DiscordChat does it by hand, but see the note at the top about the extension. Its config file, oxide/config/DiscordChat.json (carbon/configs on Carbon), appears after the first load.

Step 4: connect it

Open Installed on the Plugins tab, press Config on Discord Chat, and fill in two things:

  • Discord Bot Token: the token from step 1. It starts empty, and until you set it the Console says "Please set the Discord Bot Token and reload the plugin".
  • Under Chat Settings, Chat Channel ID: the channel's ID from step 1.

Press Save, then Reload plugin. When it works the Console prints "Discord Chat Ready". If the Console says "Your bot was not found in any discord servers", the bot hasn't been invited. Use the install link again.

What else you can set

  • Send Messages From Server Chat To Discord Channel and Send Messages From Discord Channel To Server Chat: both true, so chat goes both ways. Turn one off for a one-way feed.
  • Add Discord Tag To In Game Messages When Sent From Discord: the label shown in game, [#5f79d6][Discord][/#] to start with.
  • Team Channel ID, Cards Channel ID and Clans Channel ID: separate channels for those chats.
  • Player State Settings: a channel for join and leave messages, with Send Connecting Message, Send Connected Message and Send Disconnected Message, all true.
  • Server State Settings: a channel for Send Booting Message, Send Online Message and Send Shutdown Message, all true.
  • Message Filter Settings: ignore chosen Discord users, roles or messages that start with a given prefix. Bot messages are always ignored.
  • Allow Unlinked Players To Chat With Server: true. Set it to false and only people who have linked their Discord and game accounts can chat to the server. Others are told "You're not allowed to chat with the server unless you are linked."

The plugin also works with Better Chat, if you run it. How to use the Better Chat plugin on your Rust server covers that one, and Discord Chat warns you if its version is older than 5.2.7.

Common problems

  1. Nothing is posted. Check the token, the channel ID and that the bot is in the server and can see the channel.
  2. Messages from Discord don't reach game. The bot needs the message content intent from step 1.
  3. The plugin won't load. It is built on the Discord extension. Without it, the plugin fails to compile with "The type or namespace name 'Discord' does not exist in the namespace 'Oxide.Ext' (are you missing an assembly reference?)". That line means the extension is missing, so check Oxide.Ext.Discord.dll is in the Managed folder and that you restarted after adding it.
