Use the Clans Plugin on Rust
Add chat-command clans and alliances to a Rust server with the Clans plugin, and see how it differs from the game's own clans.
The Clans plugin by k1lly0u adds chat-command clans to a Rust server: a tag, owner and moderator roles, clan chat and alliances between clans. Before you install it, know that Rust has its own clan system now, and the plugin is a separate one.
Checked against Clans 0.2.10 on uMod, October 2026 (released 6 May 2026). uMod describes it as universal clans with alliance support.
Rust's own clans or the plugin
Facepunch added clans to the game in its July 2026 update. In the devblog dated 2 July 2026 they describe clans as a more advanced version of teams, with more members, different roles and permissions, a separate clan chat and announcement text, and clans created and managed at a Clan Table. The clan system is disabled in hardcore mode. A running server saves the game's clans in a clans.*.db file in its save folder.
The plugin does not use that system. It keeps its own list in oxide/data/clan_data.json (carbon/data/clan_data.json on Carbon) and is driven by chat commands, so a player's membership in one does not show up in the other. Install it when you want alliances, clan tags in chat, or other plugins that read the plugin's clans. If the game's clans are enough, skip it.
Install it
Open the Plugins tab, stay on Store, search for Clans and press Install on the entry named Clans by k1lly0u. Several other clan plugins turn up in the same search. How to install Oxide/uMod plugins on your Rust server covers the tab and config window.
On Oxide, a newly installed plugin stays unloaded until you restart the server or type oxide.load Clans in the Console. On Carbon it loads by itself within seconds, and oxide.load does nothing there, so use c.load Clans, c.unload Clans and c.reload Clans. The plugin registers no permissions, so every player can use it as soon as it loads.
What players type
All of these are chat commands. /clanhelp lists the ones a player can use.
Settings
The first load writes oxide/config/Clans.json (carbon/configs on Carbon); change it in the Config window on the Plugins tab. The defaults are:
- Member limit 8, Moderator limit 2, and Alliance limit 2, with Enable clan alliances on.
- Invitations to a clan and to an alliance expire after 86400 seconds (24 hours). Up to 8 clan invitations and 2 alliance invitations can be open at once.
- Tags are 2 to 5 characters, shown as
[TAG]. Enable clan tags (requires BetterChat) is on, so the tag only appears in chat when Better Chat is installed. - Enable clan purging is on and set to 14 days.
- Data save interval (seconds) is 900, and the data is also saved when the plugin unloads.
With purging on, a clan whose members have all been offline for more than 14 days is removed when the plugin starts, along with any clan that has no members. Turn Enable clan purging off, or raise the number of days, before a long break.
Common problems
- The tag is rejected. It must be 2 to 5 characters and not already taken.
- A player cannot accept an invitation. Invites expire after 24 hours, so invite them again.
- Tags do not show in chat. Install Better Chat as well.
- A clan has disappeared. Check the purge setting above.
- Players made clans at a Clan Table and expect them to appear here. They will not; the plugin has its own list.
