Load a schematic in WorldEdit on Minecraft

Upload a .schem file to the WorldEdit schematics folder, load it with //schem load and paste it into your world, then save your own builds.

Updated 3 min read

A schematic is a saved build. WorldEdit writes one from your clipboard, and you can load it back later, on the same server or another. This guide shows where schematic files go on your server, how to add a downloaded one and how to paste it into the world.

Checked against WorldEdit 7.4.6 on Paper 26.3, October 2026.

What you need

  • WorldEdit installed and working, with permission to use it. See Set up WorldEdit on your Minecraft server.
  • A .schem file. WorldEdit 7 and newer saves in the Sponge .schem format. It can still load old .schematic files, but it can no longer write them.

Where the files go

WorldEdit reads schematics from plugins/WorldEdit/schematics. WorldEdit creates the folder itself on its first start, so it is normally already there.

  1. Open File Manager under Essentials and go into plugins, then WorldEdit.
  2. If there is no schematics folder (for example you deleted it), click New folder and name it schematics, all lower case.
  3. Open it, click Upload (the upload button in the toolbar, with the tooltip Upload files) and choose your .schem file.

A browser upload is capped at 100 MB per file. For something larger, use SFTP; see Connect to your server over SFTP.

You can keep schematics in subfolders. Create the subfolder the same way, and refer to the file as folder/name in the commands below.

Load and paste it

Do this in game. The clipboard is kept in your player session.

  1. List what WorldEdit can see: //schem list
  2. Load one into your clipboard: //schem load castle. You can leave off the .schem ending.
  3. Walk to where you want the build and type //paste.
  4. If it is not where you wanted, type //undo and move.

A paste is placed relative to your position. Schematics keep the offset from the moment they were copied, so standing in the right spot matters. Useful flags are -a to skip air so the paste does not erase what is there, -o to paste at the original position, and -e to include entities. Turn a build with //rotate 90, or flip it with //flip.

Save your own

Select a build, run //copy, then //schem save castle. The file appears in the schematics folder, where you can download it from the File Manager. //schem delete castle removes it. //schem share uploads the clipboard to the EngineHub paste service, which deletes shared files after a month.

Common problems

  • File not found. Check the name matches the file and that it sits in plugins/WorldEdit/schematics. The folder name comes from saving.dir in the config.
  • You lack permission. Loading needs worldedit.clipboard.load and worldedit.schematic.load, and pasting needs worldedit.clipboard.paste.
  • The build pastes in the wrong place. The WorldEdit docs say files from other software may not store a relative position. Use //undo, move and paste again.
  • An old .schematic file. WorldEdit can still load it, but when you save it again the file comes out as .schem.
Tip

Clear the clipboard with /clearclipboard when you are done. WorldEdit also holds it for 10 minutes after you log off.
