Set up Simple Elevators on Minecraft

Install Simple Elevators on Paper or Purpur by upload, build a lift from two blocks, tune distance and delay in config.yml and set permissions.

Updated 4 min read

Simple Elevators adds working lifts to your world. A player stands on an elevator block, presses Space to go up one floor and Shift to go down one. You define which two blocks make an elevator, so it fits your build. It runs only on the server, so players install nothing.

Checked against Simple Elevators 3.16.0 on Paper, whose SpigotMC title lists Minecraft 1.8 to 26.2 while its Versions section says 1.8 to 26.1.2, October 2026.

Which Simple Elevators this is

Several plugins have a similar name. This guide covers the one on SpigotMC by Benz56, with the commands /elevator and /elevatoradmin. A Modrinth listing called Simple Elevators is a different plugin that uses daylight sensors, so do not follow this guide with it.

What you need

  • A Paper or Purpur server, which shows a Plugins tab under Content in the panel menu.
  • Nothing else. The plugin's page lists no other plugin as required. It works with the EssentialsX and CMI /back commands.

Install Simple Elevators

This plugin is published on SpigotMC, and the Plugins tab has no SpigotMC source, so you upload the jar yourself:

  1. On your computer, download it from spigotmc.org/resources/44462.
  2. Open File Manager, go into the plugins folder and click Upload. Choose the jar.
  3. Open Console and click Restart. The server needs a restart before a new plugin loads.

The first start writes a config.yml and a messages.yml in a folder inside plugins. The developer's documentation calls the plugin Elevator, so look for plugins/Elevator.

Build an elevator

An elevator is a set of two blocks, one on top of the other, where the first material is the block at your feet. The default combinations list in config.yml has four entries. The first pairs a Quartz Block with a Redstone Block.

  1. In game, stand where you want the lower floor.
  2. Run /elevator list to see the combinations and their numbers.
  3. Run /elevator create 1 to place combination 1 where you stand. Add a distance, such as /elevator create 1 10, to place a second one 10 blocks up.

Stand on an elevator block, then press Space to go up or Shift to go down. /elevator create places blocks, so think before you hand out its permission.

Change the settings

Open config.yml in File Manager, edit it, click Save, then run elevatoradmin reload in the Console. The ones to know:

  • combinations is the list of block pairs. Use any for either block, as in Quartz_Block, any or any, Redstone_block. If any is the top block, every elevator in the column must be the same height, so a player standing on a slab can only lift to slabs. A third value sets the distance for that pair, as in Quartz_Block, Redstone_block, 10. Names must be valid Minecraft materials. Since 3.16.0 a bad entry is skipped with a warning instead of breaking the load.
  • maxDistance is the longest jump between floors. It starts at 40, and 255 or higher turns the limit off.
  • enabledworlds limits the plugin to the worlds you list. Leave it empty for all worlds.
  • delay waits that many ticks before lifting, where 20 ticks is one second. It starts at 0. elevatorCooldown sets a pause before the same player can use another, also in ticks.
  • actionBarEnabled shows the floor message. Its wording is the floorUp and floorDown keys in config.yml. messages.yml holds the command replies.

Permissions

Every player has elevator.use by default, so any elevator works for them. To limit one combination, use elevator.use.<combination>. /elevator commands need elevator.commands plus the one for that command, such as elevator.commands.create. The admin commands need elevator.admin. See Set up LuckPerms on your Minecraft server for assigning them.

Two bypass nodes exist: elevator.bypass.cooldown and elevator.bypass.distance. elevator.distance.60 gives a player a longer reach than maxDistance.

Common problems

  • The elevator does nothing. Check the block pair matches a line in combinations, with the first material at the player's feet. Check enabledworlds includes the world.
  • Too far to reach. The destination is further than maxDistance. Raise it, or give the player an elevator.distance.<number> node.
  • The config will not load. See How to find and fix YAML and JSON config errors.
