Set up VeinMiner on your Minecraft server
Install VeinMiner on Paper, then set the cooldown, chain limit and block groups with in-game commands so one swing mines a whole vein.
VeinMiner lets a player break one block and have the whole connected vein go with it. It comes set up for ores and pickaxes, and you can add other blocks. It runs on the server, so every player gets it without installing anything, and it is configured mostly with in-game commands.
Checked against VeinMiner 2.13.0 on Paper 26.2, October 2026.
Which VeinMiner this is
The project comes in two versions. Version 2.x is a plugin and mod with full settings, and this guide covers it on Paper or Purpur. Version 1.x is a lighter datapack with its own menu, which this guide does not cover. A Fabric, Quilt or NeoForge server uses the same 2.x project through the Mods tab.
What it needs
- A Plugins tab, which means Paper or Purpur (Change Minecraft server version or loader shows how to switch).
- A build that matches your Minecraft version. 2.13.0 covers 26.1 to 26.3. Older Paper builds go back to Minecraft 1.17, so the store usually finds one for an older server too.
- No other plugin. The Paper build lists no dependencies.
Install it
- Create a backup in the Backups tab.
- Open Plugins, keep the Modrinth source chip selected and search for
VeinMiner. - Click Install on the VeinMiner row.
- Open the Console tab and click Restart, or Start if the server is stopped.
Try it
By default anyone can veinmine with the right tool: no sneaking, a one second pause between uses, and at most 100 blocks per break. Go into survival mode, hold a pickaxe and mine one block of an ore vein. The rest of the vein should break.
Operators have every VeinMiner permission. Make yourself one with Operators in the Players tab (Whitelist players and set operators).
Commands
Run these in game as an operator:
/veinminer blocksedits which blocks can be veinmined with any tool./veinminer groupsedits blocks and tools with precise rules./veinminer settingschanges values such as the cooldown and the maximum chain./veinminer presetssets up some useful groups and settings quickly./veinminer toggleturns VeinMiner on or off for the whole server.
To change a setting, write /veinminer settings <name> <value>. Leave the value off to see the current one. The common settings and their defaults:
To make players sneak before veinmining works, set mustSneak to true.
Make a group
A group treats several blocks as one and can limit them to certain tools. This makes all logs veinmine with axes only:
/veinminer groups create Logs/veinminer groups edit Logs add-block #minecraft:logs/veinminer groups edit Logs add-tool #minecraft:axes
The # form is a tag, so one entry covers every log type. You can also edit default_groups.json in the plugin's folder under plugins using File Manager.
Permissions and problems
- Restrict it to some players. Set
permissionRestrictedtotrue. Only players withveinminer.usecan then veinmine, which you grant in a permissions plugin (Set up LuckPerms). - The server lags after a big break. The plugin's page warns that very large veins create many item drops. Lower
maxChain. - Updates arrive by themselves.
autoUpdateistrueby default and downloads new versions. Set it tofalseif you would rather update from the Plugins tab with Check for updates.
Mining speed can also be slowed with miningSpeedModifier, which lengthens the break time as the vein grows.
