Set up MoreMobHeads on your Minecraft server
Install MoreMobHeads on Paper or Purpur for mob and player head drops, tune drop chances and lists, and fix common problems.
MoreMobHeads makes mobs and players drop their heads when they are killed. It covers the vanilla mobs, every villager profession and type, the named tropical fish and baby mobs, and it can add a Wandering Trader who sells heads and block heads. It is a plugin, so it runs on Paper or Purpur and is managed from the Plugins tab.
Checked against MoreMobHeads 1.20_1.0.46, the newest release named in the project's own update feed and on its Bukkit Plugins file list, October 2026. A beta file, 1.20_1.0.47.D1, sits above it on that list, but 1.0.46 is the newest file marked Release, so it is the one to use. The 1.20 line is for Minecraft 1.20 and newer.
What you need
- A Paper or Purpur server on Minecraft 1.20 or newer. Vanilla servers have no Plugins tab; switch software in JAR Manager first (see Change your Minecraft version or mod loader).
- Nothing else. Its optional hooks (PlaceholderAPI, EssentialsX, VentureChat and a few others) are only used if you already run them. The project's build file targets Java 17, and our panel picks the Java version from your Minecraft version, so there is nothing to set.
Install it
The plugin is published on SpigotMC and as MoreMobHeads2 in the CurseForge Bukkit Plugins list. The Plugins tab has no SpigotMC source, so you have two routes. Modrinth has a project called More Mob Heads, but it is a Forge mod, not this plugin, so skip it.
- Open the Plugins tab, select the CurseForge button and search for MoreMobHeads2. Click Install on the result named MoreMobHeads2 (project page: https://dev.bukkit.org/projects/moremobheads2).
- If it does not turn up, download the jar from the plugin's CurseForge (Bukkit) page. Prefer that file over the SpigotMC listing, which can lag the newest version. Then open File Manager, go into the
pluginsfolder, click Upload files and choose the jar.
Then use Restart on the Console tab. The Installed view of the Plugins tab should list MoreMobHeads.
First run
The plugin writes its files into plugins/MoreMobHeads. The ones you will touch are config.yml and custom_trades.yml. The jar also carries a config_comments.yml that explains every option, but the plugin never reads it, so edit config.yml only.
You can change a setting from the Console instead of editing the file. For example, mmh config head_settings.apply_looting false switches Looting off, and mmh config head_settings.mob_heads.whitelist add zombie, piglin adds those two mobs to the list of mobs that make heads.
Options worth knowing, all in config.yml:
head_settings.apply_lootingdecides whether Looting affects drops.head_settings.mob_heads.whitelistandblacklistchoose which mobs make heads.global_settings.world.whitelistandblacklistchoose which worlds drop heads.head_settings.mob_heads.nametaglets players with the nametag permission turn a named Skeleton, Zombie or Villager into a player head.wandering_trades.custom_wandering_traderswitches the head trader on or off.
Drop chances
Each mob has its own file under plugins/MoreMobHeads/heads/entity. Run mmh chance export in the Console to write all chances to entity_chances.json in the plugin's update folder, edit it in File Manager, then run mmh chance import. To set one value, use mmh chance set <name> <percent>, where the percent is from 0 to 100; mmh chance set player 5 sets the player head chance to 5 percent.
Commands and permissions
/mmh reloadneedsmoremobheads.reload. It also works from the Console./mmh giveheadopens a menu for giving a head (moremobheads.give), and/mmh viewheadsopens a menu to browse them (moremobheads.viewheads). Both are for players in the game, not the Console./mmh customtrader add, remove <number>andreplace <number>edit the Wandering Trader's trades (moremobheads.customtrader). They are for players in the game: hold the item to sell in your off hand and the prices in the first two hotbar slots before you runadd.mmh configandmmh chanceneedmoremobheads.config, and the Console can run both.moremobheads.mobsandmoremobheads.playerslet a player collect mob and player heads. Both default to true.
Common problems
- No heads drop. Check the world and mob lists in
config.yml, then runmmh reloadand test again. - A warning about an unsupported version on start. On a Minecraft version newer than the plugin knows, it warns and tries to load its newest handler anyway. Check for a newer release.
- A YAML error after an edit. See Find and fix YAML and JSON config errors.
Take a backup before editing the head files by hand, and keep the server stopped while you do.
