Set up the TerraFirmaGreg modpack server
Install TerraFirmaGreg-Modern on a Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge server from the Modpacks tab, plus the config and backup settings to review.
TerraFirmaGreg-Modern is a survival and tech modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1 on Forge. Its CurseForge page describes it as TerraFirmaCraft and GregTech Modern joined together, with Create, Greate, Ad Astra and Applied Energistics 2 on top. This guide covers the Modern pack. The 1.12 version, TerraFirmaGreg-Vintage, is a separate pack. You install the server from the Modpacks tab.
Checked against TerraFirmaGreg-Modern 0.13.15 (CurseForge file dated 21 October 2026, a client export) on Forge 47.4.13 and Minecraft 1.20.1, October 2026. The Modpacks tab's default file is an older release, as explained below.
What the pack needs
- Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge 47.4.13. The pack's mod list names that Forge build. The panel runs 1.20.1 on Java 17, and the version-menu route below installs that Forge build.
- Memory. The team's own server start script sets a 6024 MB heap, and its wiki recommends 6 to 8 GB for players' games. Your plan sets the RAM here, so read how much RAM a Minecraft server needs and check the Minecraft plans before you install.
- Disk space. The team's own server pack unpacks to about 602 MB. The version-menu install of the client export needs more, a little over 1 GB at its peak (about 500 MB of mods and 270 MB of configs, with the 198 MB export or a second copy of the configs on disk beside them), so leave 1.5 GB plus room for the world and backups.
- The same pack version for players. Players should install TerraFirmaGreg-Modern 0.13.15. The wiki says a mod version mismatch error usually means a player did not update correctly.
Which file the Modpacks tab installs
The tab can install this pack two ways, and they give different versions.
- Newest that fits your server. This is what the version menu in the install window reads until you change it. The panel takes the newest 1.20.1 file that has a CurseForge server pack. The 0.13.15 file has none, so this route installs an older release. When this guide was checked that was TerraFirmaGreg-Modern-0.12.10, from June 2026. Players on 0.13.15 would not match it, so do not use this route for 0.13.15.
- Pick 0.13.15 in the version menu. The window lists the pack's files for your server's Minecraft version, and you choose TerraFirmaGreg-Modern-0.13.15 yourself. That file is a client export, not a server pack. The steps below use this route.
A client export holds a list of 276 files (mostly mods, with some shaders among them) and a set of configs. The panel reads that list, downloads each mod from CurseForge or the same file from Modrinth, and installs the Forge build the list names. It leaves out resource packs and shaders, and on Forge it also leaves out mods that Modrinth marks as client-side only. When this guide was checked, 219 of the 276 entries were downloaded and 53 were skipped for those reasons. The install takes longer than a server-pack install.
Four of the mods had no download the panel could fetch from either site: three APTweaks add-ons and Soulbinding. The install window may ask you to download them from CurseForge first. Modpack mods to download from CurseForge covers that step.
Install the server
- Open JAR Manager under More in the left rail, choose Forge under Server software and 1.20.1 under Minecraft version, then press Apply change. Skip this step if the server already runs Forge 1.20.1. The version menu lists only files for the server's current Minecraft version, so set it first. Apply change opens a Reinstall server? window: confirm it and wait for the reinstall to finish before step 2. Change your Minecraft version or mod loader has the full steps.
- Choose Modpacks under Content in the left rail.
- Above the search box, press the CurseForge chip, then search for
TerraFirmaGreg. - Press Install on TerraFirmaGreg-Modern. The window says it reinstalls your server and names Forge and Minecraft 1.20.1. Open the version menu, which reads Newest that fits your server, and choose TerraFirmaGreg-Modern-0.13.15. If the window has no such menu, the updated installer is not on for your account. The Install your own pack card needs the same installer, so neither route to 0.13.15 is open to you yet. Press Cancel rather than installing the older default release. If the window lists mods that need you to download them first, add each one as it asks.
- Leave Take a backup first ticked. Your current world is replaced by the pack's. Tick Start the server when it's ready if you want it to start itself, and tick I agree to the Minecraft EULA if the window shows it.
- Press and hold the Hold to Install and reinstall button until it fills, then watch the Console until the install finishes.
The team's server pack instead
The team also publishes a ready-made server pack, TerraFirmaGreg-Modern-0.13.15-serverpack.zip (about 535 MB), on the 0.13.15 release page. The Install your own pack card is part of the same updated installer, so it appears only where that installer is on for your account. Set Forge and 1.20.1 in JAR Manager as in step 1, then use the card. The team's pack names Forge 47.4.13 only in its forge-auto-install.txt, which the panel does not read. The pack also ships no variables.txt and no Forge files of its own. The panel therefore installs the recommended Forge build for 1.20.1 instead, which was 47.4.28 when this guide was checked and may be newer than 47.4.13. Upload a custom modpack or server pack covers the upload.
First start
Press Start on the Console tab. If the EULA has not been accepted yet, the panel asks you to accept it first. The server is up when the console prints a line containing For help, type. Your address is in the left rail under Server address. Connect to your server for the first time covers adding it in Minecraft.
The 0.13.15 client export has no server.properties, so the panel starts from a minimal one. The team's server pack sets level-type=tfc:overworld, and TerraFirmaCraft itself makes its own world type the default for a dedicated server. After the first start, open server.properties in File Manager and check level-type reads tfc:overworld. Leave World type in the Config Editor alone, because its menu lists only the vanilla types.
The team's own server pack also sets allow-nether=false, max-tick-time=600000, view-distance=8 and simulation-distance=8 in its server.properties. An install of 0.13.15 from the version menu does not use that file, so your server starts from Minecraft's defaults for these four. If you want the team's values, open the Config Editor, then set Nether, Watchdog timeout (ms), View distance (chunks) and Simulation distance (chunks) to match, save and restart.
Settings the team suggests
The team's server pack README names a few settings worth reviewing. Two of them are below. Edit the files in File Manager, then restart.
defaultconfigs/tfc-server.toml.torchTicksandcandleTicksset how fast torches and candles burn out.foodDecayModifiersets how fast food decays: the README says 1.0, the TerraFirmaCraft default, suits small groups, and 0.25 suits larger servers with players in many time zones. A world keeps its own copy inworld/serverconfig, so change that copy once the world exists.config/ftbbackups2.json. The pack's FTB Backups 2 mod makes its own zip backups. The client export schedules them hourly with"backup_cron": "0 0 0/1 1/1 * ? *", while the team's server README uses a daily"backup_cron": "0 15 10 * * ? *". Switch to the daily one. Each backup is a zip in abackupsfolder inside your server folder, and the mod only makes one after a player has been online since the last, so Disk Analyser is where to see what they use.
Voice chat
The pack includes Simple Voice Chat. Its config/voicechat/voicechat-server.properties sets audio to port=24454, a separate port from the game. If your plan includes extra ports, add one under Settings then Network ports, set port in that file to the new number and restart. How to add an extra port explains the card.
If your plan has no extra port, the same file offers port=-1, which makes voice chat share the Minecraft port. The file strongly recommends against it: UDP on that port is also used for the server query by default, and sharing it may crash the server.
Common problems
- A player cannot join. The team's wiki has an update and reinstall guide to send them. It says a clean reinstall is the safest way to update.
- The install stops part way. When the updated installer is on for your account, the tab shows "The last install didn't finish" with Show install log and Retry install. If you do not see that message, read the Console for the reason.
- The server crashes at boot. Find and read a crash report shows how to name the mod at fault. The pack takes bug reports on its GitHub issue tracker.
Installing a pack reinstalls your server. If you have a world you care about, keep Take a backup first ticked.
