Set up the Magic plugin on Minecraft

Install the Magic spells plugin from SpigotMC with a File Manager upload, then try wands, switch themes, reload config and handle the resource pack.

Updated 4 min read

Magic adds spell casting to survival. Players hold a magic wand, left-click to cast the active spell, and upgrade the wand at an enchanting table. It also brings spell points, custom mobs, crafting recipes and a set of ready-made themes, and nearly everything can be changed in its config.

Checked against Magic 11.2.5 on Paper 26.2, October 2026.

What it needs

  • A Plugins tab, so Paper or Purpur (Change Minecraft server version or loader). The Magic wiki says it needs Spigot or CraftBukkit, and Paper is built on Spigot.
  • A recent Minecraft version. The SpigotMC page lists 1.9 up to 26.3 as tested, and the 11.2.5 jar declares api-version: 1.17. On a current server, use 26.1 or newer, which the page lists.
  • A manual install. The download is on the SpigotMC page for Magic, and the store in the Plugins tab does not search SpigotMC. The SpigotMC page points to Bukkit Dev for older versions, so take the current jar from SpigotMC.
  • Nothing on the players' side except the resource pack, which Magic offers them by itself (see below).

Install it

  1. Download the current Magic jar from its SpigotMC page, spigotmc.org/resources/magic.1056.
  2. Create a backup in the Backups tab.
  3. Open File Manager, open the plugins folder and click Upload. Choose the jar. The browser limit is 100 MB per file, and Magic is far smaller.
  4. Open the Console tab and click Restart, or Start if the server is stopped.
  5. When the server has started, a Magic folder appears inside plugins.

First run

Magic starts with its survival setup, so you do not need to configure anything to try it. Wand mechanics, progression and available wands are all up to your config. By default only operators can use Magic's commands. Make yourself an operator with Operators in the Players tab (Whitelist players and set operators). Then, in game:

  • /wand creates a new empty wand, and /wand list lists the wands defined in wands.yml.
  • /wand add <spell> adds a spell to the wand you hold.
  • /mgive [player] <item> [amount] gives any item, including spells, wands and skill points. Leave the player off to give it to yourself.
  • /spells lists the spells a player knows.

Players can cast any spell on a wand they hold, even without commands. The wiki says wands do not really work in creative mode, so test in survival.

Change what Magic does

Do not edit the files in the defaults folder. Put your changes in the files in plugins/Magic, which override the defaults. After a change, run /magic load to reload.

  • Switch theme. /mconfig example set <name> swaps to a built-in example such as potter, bending or war. /mconfig example add <name> layers one on top, for example engineering. Try these on a test server, because they can break wands you already handed out.
  • Disable one spell. /mconfig disable spell blink, then /magic load.
  • Edit in a browser. /mconfig editor opens the web editor, which also flags YAML mistakes.
  • Change the text. In-game messages live in plugins/Magic/messages.yml.

The resource pack

Magic sends players its resource pack by default. Without it, wands look like wooden hoes, spell icons do not show and the custom sounds do not play. To turn it off, add resource_pack: "" to plugins/Magic/config.yml. The Examples wiki also lists a norp example, /mconfig example add norp, described as turning off the resource pack. If you set your own pack in Config Editor instead, Magic leaves it alone.

Permissions

Players need no Magic permissions to use wands. For staff, magic.commands.* and magic.create.* give access to the commands and items, through a permissions plugin (Set up LuckPerms). The Magic wiki advises against magic.*.

Common problems

  • The broomstick will not move. If you set Paper's armor_stand_tick option to false, set it back to true. Brooms and some other features use armour stands.
  • Wands lose their data or menus break. The wiki lists plugins that interfere, among them AutoSaveWorlds, ItemLoreStats, Bags2 and Itemjoin.
  • A config error. Use spaces, never tabs, and keep top-level keys with no leading space.
Warning

Back up before you try an example theme. Switching examples changes the wands and spells on your server.
