Set up the Fear Nightfall modpack server
Install the Fear Nightfall: Remains of Chaos horror modpack on a Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge server from the Modpacks tab, with voice chat notes.
Fear Nightfall: Remains of Chaos is a horror modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1 on Forge. Its CurseForge page describes it as made for co-op, difficult and immersive, with a campaign and a lot of custom content. You install the server from the Modpacks tab, using the pack's own server files.
Checked against Fear Nightfall: Remains of Chaos 1.1.4 (CurseForge file dated 13 September 2025) on Forge 47.4.8 and Minecraft 1.20.1, October 2026.
What the pack needs
- Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge 47.4.8. The server files name that Forge build in their
variables.txt. The panel runs 1.20.1 on Java 17 and picks it for you. - Memory. The pack's page gives no RAM figure. Its
variables.txtsets a 4 GB heap, but your plan sets the RAM here, so read how much RAM a Minecraft server needs and check the Minecraft plans before you install. - Disk space. The server files are a download of about 764 MB and unpack to about 804 MB. The download sits on your plan's disk while it unpacks, so you need room for both.
- The same pack version for players. Players should install Fear Nightfall: Remains of Chaos 1.1.4 from the CurseForge app. The page also links guides for playing in VR and setting up voice chat.
Install the server
- Open your server and choose Modpacks under Content in the left rail.
- Above the search box, press the CurseForge chip, then search for
Fear Nightfall. - Press Install on Fear Nightfall: Remains of Chaos, and check the row says it is by LunaPixelStudios. Other packs have similar names. The window names the loader and Minecraft version it will use. It should read Forge and Minecraft 1.20.1.
- Leave Take a backup first ticked. Your current world is replaced by the pack's. Tick Start the server when it's ready if you want it to start itself, and tick I agree to the Minecraft EULA if the window shows it.
- Press and hold the Hold to Install and reinstall button until it fills, then watch the Console until the install finishes.
The server files hold the mods and configs but no Forge. When the panel finds no launcher in the files, it reads variables.txt and installs the loader named there, so it sets up Forge 47.4.8.
First start
Press Start on the Console tab. If the EULA has not been accepted yet, the panel asks you to accept it first. The server is up when the console prints a line containing For help, type. Your address is in the left rail under Server address. Connect to your server for the first time covers adding it in Minecraft.
The pack's server.properties sets allow-flight=true and enable-command-block=true. The Config Editor shows them as Allow flight and Command blocks under Gameplay.
Voice chat
The pack includes Simple Voice Chat 2.6.3. Its config/voicechat/voicechat-server.properties sets audio to port=24454, a separate port from the game. If your plan includes extra ports, add one under Settings then Network ports, set port in that file to the new number and restart. How to add an extra port explains the card.
If your plan has no extra port, the same file offers port=-1, which makes voice chat share the Minecraft port. The file strongly recommends against it: UDP on that port is also used for the server query by default, and sharing it may crash the server.
Common problems
- A player cannot join. Check they run Fear Nightfall: Remains of Chaos 1.1.4 on Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge, then compare their mod list with the server's
modsfolder. - The install stops while unpacking. Your plan's disk may be too small. Check Disk Analyser, clear space and install again.
- The server lags. The pack includes spark. Profile a modded server with spark shows how to find what is slow.
- The server crashes at boot. Find and read a crash report shows how to name the mod at fault.
Installing a pack reinstalls your server. If you have a world you care about, keep Take a backup first ticked.
