Set up the Cave Horror Project server
Install Cave Horror Project 1 on a Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge server from the Modpacks tab, using its CurseForge server pack, with voice chat notes.
Cave Horror Project is a horror survival modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1 on Forge. Its CurseForge page lists over 240 quests across six chapters, horror mods such as The Anomaly and Cave Dweller, and Simple Voice Chat with walkie-talkies. This guide covers the first pack, Cave Horror Project 1. You install the server from the Modpacks tab, using the pack's own server files.
Checked against Cave Horror Project 1 v3.6.1 (the CurseForge file dated 1 October 2026) on Forge 47.4.23 and Minecraft 1.20.1, October 2026.
What the pack needs
- Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge 47.4.23. The server pack ships Forge already installed in its
librariesfolder. Minecraft 1.20.1 runs on Java 17, which the panel picks for you. - Memory. The CurseForge page gives no figure. The server pack's
user_jvm_args.txthas only a comment that says a good default for a modded server is 4 GB, and its-Xmx4Gline is commented out. The panel sizes the heap from your plan anyway. Read how much RAM a Minecraft server needs and check the Minecraft plans before you install. - Disk space. The server pack is a download of about 437 MB and unpacks to about 486 MB. The download sits on your plan's disk while it unpacks, so you need room for both.
- The same pack version for players. Players need the same version your server installs. This guide was checked against v3.6.1.
Install the server
- Open your server and choose Modpacks under Content in the left rail.
- In the search card, press the CurseForge button in the row of sources, then search for
Cave Horror Project. - Pick the one whose title starts with Cave Horror Project 1. Cave Horror Project 2 is a separate pack for Minecraft 1.19.2.
- Press Install. The popup says it reinstalls your server with the pack and names Forge and Minecraft 1.20.1.
- Leave Take a backup first ticked. Your current world is replaced by the pack's. Tick Start the server when it's ready if you want it to start itself. Once that is ticked, an I agree to the Minecraft EULA box may appear if the EULA has not been accepted yet, and you tick it too.
- Hold Install and reinstall until it fills, then wait for the install to finish.
The server pack carries Forge's launch arguments in its libraries folder, and the panel starts the server from them with its own memory flags. The pack's run.sh and user_jvm_args.txt are not used.
First start
Press Start on the Console tab. The server pack includes an eula.txt already set to true. If the panel still asks about the EULA, accept it. The server is up when the console prints a line containing For help, type. Your address is in the left rail with a copy button beside it. The Server address label shows on wide screens only. Connect to your server for the first time covers adding it in Minecraft.
Voice chat
The pack includes Simple Voice Chat. Its config/voicechat/voicechat-server.properties sets audio to port=24454, a separate port from the game. If your plan includes extra ports, add one under Settings then Network ports, set port in that file to the new number and restart. How to add an extra port explains the card.
Common problems
- A player cannot join. Check they run the same Cave Horror Project 1 version as the server, on Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge, then compare their mod list with the server's
modsfolder. - The install stops while unpacking. Your plan's disk may be too small. Check Disk Analyser, clear space and install again.
- The server lags or runs out of memory. Watch the RAM card on the Console tab and the TPS reading in the left rail. Why is my server lagging has more.
- The server crashes at boot. Find and read a crash report shows how to name the mod at fault.
Installing a pack reinstalls your server. If you have a world you care about, keep Take a backup first ticked.
