Set up the Cobblemon Academy modpack server

Install Cobblemon Academy 2.0 on a Minecraft 1.21.1 Fabric server from the Modpacks tab, with its version choice, settings and voice chat notes.

Updated 6 min read

Cobblemon Academy 2.0 is a Fabric modpack for Minecraft 1.21.1 built around the Cobblemon mod. Its CurseForge page describes new biomes, hundreds of structures to explore and an easy economy. You install the server from the Modpacks tab, using CurseForge as the source.

Checked against Cobblemon Academy 2.0 versions 2.4.0 (server files dated 31 March 2026) and 2.7.0 (23 September 2026) on Fabric and Minecraft 1.21.1, October 2026.

Pick the right project

CurseForge has two packs with this name. Cobblemon Academy 2.0 is the current one and the one this guide covers. Cobblemon Academy (Legacy) is a separate project whose newest file is 1.4.1. Search for Cobblemon Academy 2.0 and check the author line before you press Install.

What private servers do not have

The pack's page says some features of the public Academy server are not available in privately hosted worlds at this time. It names raids, dungeons, hideouts, ranked battles, the safari world, daycare and the shop system. It says they may come in later pack updates. Plan your server around what is left, which is the Cobblemon content, the world generation and the structures.

What the pack needs

  • Minecraft 1.21.1 with Fabric. The panel switches Java for you, which is Java 21 for this version.
  • Memory. The pack's own file list recommends 5 GB for 2.4.0 and 6 GB for 2.7.0. The pack's start script asks for an 8 GB heap, but the panel does not read it and sizes the heap from your plan's RAM at every start. Read how much RAM a Minecraft server needs and check the Minecraft plans before you install.
  • Disk space. The 2.4.0 server files are a download of about 347 MB and unpack to about 418 MB. Allow room for both while it unpacks.
  • The same pack version for players. The 2.7.0 notes warn that updating the pack may stop a player joining servers on older versions, so every player should run the version you install.

Choose a pack version

The newest files do not all come with server files. 2.4.0 does, and 2.4.2 and every later release up to 2.7.0 does not. When you leave the version on its default, the installer takes the newest file that has server files, so you get 2.4.0.

If the install popup has a version dropdown (it reads Newest that fits your server), you can open it to pick another file. It lists the pack's files for your server's current Minecraft version, so a server on another version, such as Forge 1.20.1 when this guide was checked, is offered only Newest that fits your server. On a server already on Minecraft 1.21.1 you can choose Cobblemon Academy 2.0-2.7.0.zip instead. That file has no server files, so the installer reads the pack's mod list and downloads each mod itself. From the pack's mod list, the installer finds 215 mods on CurseForge or Modrinth, leaves out the pack's two resource packs and its six optional entries, and needs no manual download. It turns 58 of those mods off because they are client-only, and the Mods tab can turn them back on. Either way, tell your players which version you chose.

Install the server files

  1. Open your server and choose Modpacks under Content in the left rail.
  2. Above the search box, press the CurseForge chip, then search for Cobblemon Academy 2.0.
  3. Press Install on Cobblemon Academy 2.0. The popup says it reinstalls your server with the pack and names Fabric and Minecraft 1.21.1.
  4. Choose a version in the dropdown if the popup has one, as above.
  5. Leave Take a backup first ticked. Your current world is replaced by the pack's. The popup also has a Keep my world, settings and player lists box, unticked by default. Tick Start the server when it's ready if you want it to start itself, and tick I agree to the Minecraft EULA if the popup shows it.
  6. Hold Install and reinstall until it fills, then wait for the install to finish.

First start

Press Start on the Console tab. If the EULA has not been accepted yet, the panel asks you to accept it first. The server is up when the console prints a line containing For help, type. Your address is in the left rail under Server address. Connect to your server for the first time covers adding it in Minecraft.

Settings in the 2.4.0 server files

The 2.4.0 server files ship a server.properties, and the install keeps it. The 2.7.0 file has no server files, and installing it writes a small server.properties of its own that holds only the address and port lines, so these values are not there. Open the Config Editor to change these:

  • max-players=69 is Player slots under Players.
  • view-distance=12 and simulation-distance=10 are View distance (chunks) and Simulation distance (chunks) under Performance. Lower them if the server struggles.
  • motd is Server list message under World, and it starts as "A Cobblemon Academy 2.0 Server".

Voice chat

Both versions include Simple Voice Chat 2.5.35. The 2.4.0 server files ship config/voicechat/voicechat-server.properties with port=24454, and its comments say voice travels over UDP on that port, separate from the game, and that sharing the game's port is not recommended. If your plan includes extra ports, add one under Settings then Network ports, set port in that file to the new number and restart. How to add an extra port explains the card.

Common problems

  • A player cannot join. Check they run the same Cobblemon Academy 2.0 version as the server, then compare their mod list with the mods folder.
  • The install window closes after you hold the button and nothing installs. This happened on a server whose backup slots were all full of protected backups while Take a backup first was ticked. Unticking it let the same install run, so untick it only when you do not need a backup of the current world.
  • The install stops while unpacking. Your plan's disk may be too small for the pack. Check Disk Analyser, clear space and install again.
  • The server lags. Watch the RAM card on the Console tab and the TPS reading in the left rail. Why is my server lagging has more.
  • The server crashes at boot. Find and read a crash report shows how to name the mod at fault.
Warning

Installing a pack reinstalls your server. If you have a world you care about, keep Take a backup first ticked.
