Set up Brewery (BreweryX) on your server
Install BreweryX, the maintained Brewery fork, brew and age your first drink, edit recipes and config files, and set the permissions.
Brewery adds a slower brewing process to Minecraft: you ferment ingredients in a cauldron, distill them and age them in barrels, and the finished drinks can make players drunk. The original Brewery plugin was last released in July 2022, so this guide installs BreweryX, its actively maintained fork, from the Plugins tab.
Checked against BreweryX 3.7.1, which lists Paper 1.20.2 to 26.2 on its Modrinth page, October 2026.
What you need
- A Paper or Purpur server. BreweryX lists Paper, Purpur, Spigot, Bukkit and Folia. Vanilla servers have no Plugins tab, so switch software in JAR Manager first (see Change your Minecraft version or mod loader).
- Nothing else. BreweryX saves its data to SQLite by default, so you do not need a separate database.
Install it
- Open the Plugins tab and leave the Modrinth button selected. The plugin is also on Hangar.
- Search for BreweryX, not Brewery, and click Install.
- Restart from the Console tab with Restart.
- Type
pluginsin the Console. BreweryX should be listed.breweryx helpprints its command list.
If you already run the original Brewery, stop the server first and delete only the old Brewery jar in the File Manager. Leave Brewery's data folder where it is. When BreweryX starts, it moves that data into its own folder.
Brew your first drink
The command is /breweryx, with the aliases /brewery and /brew. The aliases come from the commandAliases option in config.yml, and changing them needs a restart.
- Fill a cauldron with water and put a heat source under it: fire, soul fire, lava, a magma block, a lit campfire or a lit soul campfire.
- Right-click the cauldron with each ingredient in the recipe.
- Use a clock on the cauldron to see how long it has been brewing.
- When the recipe's time is up, take the brew out with three glass bottles.
The default beer recipe takes 6 wheat, cooks for 8 minutes and ages for 3 years in a barrel of any wood. One year of aging lasts 20 minutes by default (agingYearDuration). To make a barrel, place a sign with the word Barrel on it onto a collection of blocks. Servers can change or remove recipes, so a recipe from the docs may differ on yours.
To test quickly, an admin can give themselves a drink with /brew create beer, where beer is a recipe's id in recipes.yml.
Files and settings
BreweryX keeps its files in plugins/BreweryX:
config.ymlholds the general settings, includinglanguageand thestoragesection.recipes.ymlholds the recipes.cauldron.ymlandcustom-items.ymlsit beside it.- A
langsfolder holds the translations.
Edit them in the File Manager, then run breweryx reload in the Console. The reload re-reads those files but does not reload storage. The config warns that BreweryX files do not support external comments: any comment you add is overwritten.
Some config.yml options affect drinkers. enableKickOnOverdrink is false by default, enablePuke is true, and enableLoginDisallow is true, which can make a very drunk player retry their login. enableHome wakes a drunk player at /home, but it needs a plugin that provides that command.
Permissions
brewery.usercovers everything needed for brewing and is granted to everyone by default.brewery.modadds the wakeup point command and lets a player log in even when very drunk.brewery.admincovers every command, such ascreateandreload. Operators have it by default.
A permissions plugin is the usual way to hand these out (see Set up LuckPerms).
Common problems
- The barrel does not form. The sign has to contain the word Barrel. With
requireKeywordOnSignson, which is the default, barrels are only created from signs that have it. If you changedlanguage, the word is the translated one. - A recipe change does nothing. Run
breweryx reload, then check the Console for errors. - Your comments disappeared from a config file. BreweryX rewrites its files, so keep notes elsewhere.
The docs are at breweryx.breweryteam.dev. The recipes.yml header explains every recipe option, including cookingtime, distillruns, wood and age.
