Lockpick Treasure Chests in Palworld
Open locked Palworld treasure chests without a key: the three Lockpicking Tools, their levels and materials, and how the mini-game works.
Lockpicking lets you open a locked treasure chest without the matching key. You craft a Lockpicking Tool once, then play a short mini-game at each chest. This guide covers the three tool tiers, what they cost to make and how the mini-game works.
Checked against Palworld v1.0.5 (Pocketpair's latest patch notes, 15 September 2026; paldb.cc game data v1.0.5), October 2026.
What lockpicking is
Pocketpair added it in the v0.3.1 Sakurajima update. Its notes say you can attempt to open locked treasure chests with the new lockpicking mini-game, and that it requires a Lockpicking Tool. paldb.cc's 1.0.5 game data still lists all three tools.
The three tools
There is one tool per chest tier. paldb.cc describes each as a way to pry open any chest that would normally need a particular key, so match the tool to the key the chest asks for.
The wiki and paldb.cc agree on the technology levels and the materials. The wiki adds that each higher tool also covers the lower tiers, so a v3 tool opens Copper and Silver chests too. paldb.cc's descriptions name only the one key. Either way, carry the tool that matches the chest and you are safe.
The wiki says you craft them at the Primitive Workbench and that the Lockpicking Tool is a Key Item. paldb.cc also lists the tools as Key Items. Check the recipe in your own crafting menu before you gather everything.
Picking a lock
The wiki describes the mini-game this way:
- Equip the Lockpicking Tool that matches the chest.
- Move the pick to the correct spot.
- Rotate the lock.
If you rotate too far while the pick sits in the wrong spot, the pick breaks and you start again. You can retry as often as you like, but the game does not pause while you pick, so other players or enemies can still attack you. Clear the area first.
The wiki also says the tool is not consumed or broken when you use it, unlike a key, so one tool opens any number of chests of its tier.
The wiki says that, unlike a key, a Lockpicking Tool is not consumed when you use it, so it pays to craft the tool for any tier you open more than once.
On your hosted server
Lockpicking is part of the base game, so a hosted server needs no mod for it. For the settings the World Settings tab does have, see Palworld server settings explained.
