Install SwingThroughGrass on your server
Install SwingThroughGrass 1.12.0 from CurseForge on NeoForge 1.21.8 so players can hit mobs through grass, and learn which similar mod to avoid.
SwingThroughGrass, by Exidex, lets a player hit a mob standing behind grass. The project page calls it a tiny mod that removes the moments of "I wanted to hit the mob, not the grass". It works on every block with no collision box, so tall grass, flowers, saplings, cobweb and modded plants of the same kind all count. It is a mod for Forge and NeoForge, so Paper and Purpur servers can't load it. This guide installs it on a NeoForge 1.21.8 server.
Checked against SwingThroughGrass 1.12.0 on NeoForge 1.21.8, October 2026.
Pick the right build
The mod is published on CurseForge, and its repository points there too. The newest files are:
- NeoForge 1.21.8: swingthroughgrass-1.21.8-1.12.0, uploaded on 29 September 2025.
- NeoForge 1.20.6: swingthroughgrass-1.20.6-1.11.0, uploaded on the same day.
- Forge: builds for Minecraft 1.19.2 and older, for example swingthroughgrass-1.19.2-1.10.0.
The CurseForge page lists only Forge and NeoForge. The jar for 1.21.8 asks for exactly Minecraft 1.21.8 and NeoForge 21.8.47 or newer. To change loader or version, open JAR Manager under More, choose the loader under Server software and the version under Minecraft version, then press Apply change. The switch reinstalls the server and keeps your world, so make a backup in the Backups tab first. Change your Minecraft version or mod loader has the full steps.
Install it
- Open Mods under Content. In the source chip row at the top of the tab, press CurseForge. The Game version filter starts on your server's version.
- Search for
SwingThroughGrassand press Install on the result with that exact name. - Restart from the Console tab, or press Start if the server is stopped. The install toast says "Restart the server to load it".
Open the Installed view to check. SwingThroughGrass should be listed with no Failed to load badge.
A similarly named mod
Modrinth has a separate project called Swing Through Grass, by Nikrecs, with builds for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge. Fabric and NeoForge go up to Minecraft 26.3, and Forge stops at 1.21.11. Its page calls it a server-side mod that vanilla clients can join with. It is a different download from Exidex's mod. On Fabric, its page says to install Fabric API and Architectury API as well. On NeoForge it asks for Architectury API, and on Forge it needs nothing extra. If your server runs a version the original doesn't cover, use the Modrinth chip in the source chip row at the top of the tab to find it, and install only one of the two.
Players need it too
CurseForge lists Exidex's mod for the environment Client and Server. Each player installs the same version for their loader and Minecraft version. Join a modded server from your launcher covers the player side, and Fix the mismatched mod channel list error explains a refusal when versions differ.
Settings
The 1.21.8 jar has no configuration file or option. The jar's description reads "Don't let the grass be between you and your prey!"
Common problems
- Players still hit the grass: the mod may be missing on the server. Check the Installed view for SwingThroughGrass.
- The server stops at startup: the jar is for a different Minecraft version. Delete it in the Installed view and install the file for your version.
- Other crashes: Fix mod and plugin errors on Minecraft covers reading the Console log.
