Use Farsight with your Minecraft server

Farsight is a client-side mod. Learn what it does, why it stays off the server, which view distance to set and what players install.

Updated 3 min read

Farsight, by Someaddon, lets a player see farther than a server's view distance. It is not a server mod. The author's page calls it a client-side utility and says it is only required on the client side. This guide explains what it does, what to do on your server instead, and what your players install.

Checked against Farsight 5.6 and Cupboard 4.3 on NeoForge 26.3, and Farsight 5.6 and Cupboard 4.2 on Fabric 26.3, October 2026.

What Farsight does

Farsight has the player's game keep chunks even when the server unloads them, up to a maximum render distance of 64 chunks. From version 5.0 it can also save the chunks it receives to disk, so a player can preview them later even when the server has not loaded them yet.

Leave it off the server

Every mixin in the Farsight jar is a client mixin, and the files on CurseForge are tagged Client, not Server. The Mods tab shows a disabled Client only button for mods that Modrinth marks as client-only, with the hint that players install them themselves. The author publishes Farsight on CurseForge, and CurseForge results carry no environment, so the tab will not stop you. Leave it out anyway. The jar also lists Cupboard, Someaddon's library mod, as a required dependency on both sides, so a server that did carry Farsight would need Cupboard too.

Raise the view distance on your server

If you want players to see farther without any mod, raise the server's own view distance.

  1. Open Config Editor under Content and find the Performance section.
  2. Change View distance (chunks). The editor accepts 3 to 32 and describes it as the single biggest lever on RAM and CPU. The default is 10.
  3. Press Save changes, then restart from the Console tab. The toast says "Restart the server to apply it".

Raise it in small steps and watch the TPS card in the Console tab. Simulation distance (chunks) sits beside it and is cheaper to cut when the server struggles. Why is my server lagging and How much RAM does a Minecraft server need help if the numbers climb.

What players install

The mod has two CurseForge pages, one for Fabric and one for Forge and NeoForge. The newest files at the time of checking:

  • Fabric: farsight-fabric-26.3-5.6 for Minecraft 26.3, and farsight-fabric-26.1-5.5 for 26.1 to 26.2.
  • NeoForge: farsight-26.3-5.6 for 26.3 and farsight-1.21.1-5.5 for 1.21.1.
  • Forge and NeoForge, Minecraft 1.20.1: farsight-1.20.1-5.5.1.

Newer versions need the Cupboard mod from the same author in the player's mods folder. Players don't need your server to run any of it. Join a modded server from your launcher covers the launcher side.

Player settings

Farsight's options live in a JSON file in the player's game config folder, written through Cupboard. The jar defines maxRenderDistance (64 by default, and changes need a game restart), enableChunkPreview (true by default), previewChunkLoadSpeed (1 chunk per tick by default and at minimum) and debugLogging (false by default). If Sodium limits the render distance a player can choose, the page says to press Shift+P inside Sodium's settings to reach the original settings screen.

Common problems

  • The server fails to start with Farsight installed: remove Farsight in the Installed view of the Mods tab. It was never needed there. Fix mod and plugin errors on Minecraft covers reading the Console log.
  • A player's game reports Cupboard missing: the Fabric jar lists Cupboard as required, so that player installs the Cupboard version for their Minecraft version.
