Set up Astral Sorcery on Minecraft
Install Astral Sorcery 1.10.27 on a Forge 1.12.2 server with Baubles, then check the world generation settings and the operator commands.
Astral Sorcery is HellFirePvP's magic mod about collecting starlight and shaping it with constellations. It adds blocks, items, structures and world generation, and its Journal and sky effects run on the player's side.
Checked against Astral Sorcery 1.10.27 on Forge 1.12.2, October 2026.
Pick the version
The recent CurseForge files fall into three lines, and only the first two are releases.
- 1.12.2: build 1.10.27, from August 2020. This is the one this guide follows. It needs Forge 14.23.5.2781 or newer and the Baubles mod.
- 1.16.5: build 1.14.1, from June 2022. Its
mods.tomlasks for Forge 35 or newer, ObserverLib and Curios. - NeoForge 1.21.1: version 2.0.3.59, published on 21 October 2026 and marked alpha. Treat it as a test build.
This guide follows 1.12.2. Build 1.10.27 is the most downloaded file on the project page, with about 14.7 million downloads against about 5.5 million for 1.14.1. The 1.14.1 mods.toml also names Minecraft 1.16.4 only, so the 1.16.5 line is not covered here.
The mod's page says Sponge and other third-party server software is not supported, so use Forge rather than Paper or Purpur.
Install it on 1.12.2
- Open JAR Manager under More. Choose Forge under Server software and 1.12.2 under Minecraft version, then press Apply change. The panel installs Forge's recommended build for that version and picks Java 8 for you. Switching reinstalls the server and keeps your world, so make a backup first in the Backups tab.
- Open Mods under Content and select the CurseForge chip in the source chip row at the top of the tab. Set Game version to 1.12.2, search for
Astral Sorceryand press Install on the result by HellFirePvP. If a result only links to CurseForge, its author only allows downloads there: download the file from that page and upload it to themodsfolder with the File Manager. - If a window lists add-ons the mod needs, choose Install all. Otherwise search for
Baublesand install it yourself the same way. - Restart from the Console tab.
Open the Installed view afterwards. Astral Sorcery and Baubles should both be listed with no Failed to load badge. Change your Minecraft version or mod loader has the full version steps.
Players should have it too
Every player should install the same Astral Sorcery and Baubles files for 1.12.2, so the Journal and the sky effects work on their side, because the mod draws both in its client code. Join a modded server from your launcher covers that side.
Starting out
The mod's own guide is the Journal, which walks a player through the mod. The page also says certain structures in the world are required for proper progression. By default the mod's own world generation runs only in dimension 0, the Overworld.
Add the mod to a fresh world or an unexplored area if you can. An enableRetroGen option exists for chunks that were generated earlier, but the mod warns not to enable it unless needed, because it can slow down chunk loading.
Settings and commands
The main settings are in astralsorcery.cfg in the config folder, with more .cfg files in config/astralsorcery. Stop the server and edit them in the File Manager. Useful keys:
worldGenWhitelist: the dimension IDs where the mod's world generation runs,0by default.enableRetroGen:falseby default.
Operators can run /astralsorcery or /as in the game. Its sub-commands include help, constellations, research, progress, attune, exp, maximize and reset, and the permission level is 2. Use help first to see the exact arguments.
Common problems
- The server stops at startup: read the last lines of the Console. Fix mod and plugin errors on Minecraft covers reading the log.
- The sky looks wrong for a player: the mod's page says Optifine shaders can cause graphical issues, and points to a sky render option in the mod's config for them. The key in the code is
weakSkyRenders(the page spells itweakSkyRender). It is a list of dimension IDs: a dimension listed there keeps its own sky and the mod draws only the constellations on top. - The mod is not in the store: the Game version filter follows your server. Check it reads 1.12.2 and the CurseForge chip is selected.
