Install The Quackening on your server

Put The Quackening on a Forge 1.20.1 server by uploading the jar yourself, since its author blocks one-click installs, plus common fixes.

Updated 4 min read

The Quackening is a small adventure mod by kiakkers, built with MCreator. Ducks invade your world and raid you, they build camps you can find and clear, and the mod adds gear to fight them with. It is a Forge mod for Minecraft 1.20.1 only. Its author doesn't allow other sites to download it for you, so the usual one-click install in the Mods tab won't work, and you upload the file yourself.

Checked against The Quackening file TheQuackening_minor_fixes.jar (11 July 2024) on Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1, October 2026.

What the server needs

The jar's own metadata asks for Minecraft 1.20.1 exactly and a mod loader version of 47 or newer, which Forge for 1.20.1 provides. It will not load on any other Minecraft version, and it is not built for NeoForge, Fabric or Quilt. The jar's metadata lists GeckoLib as optional, but the mod does not start without it: on a test server the restart stopped with a NoClassDefFoundError for a GeckoLib class. Install GeckoLib for Forge 1.20.1 as well. The panel runs Minecraft 1.20.1 on Java 17 and switches that for you.

The mod adds its own mobs, structures and items, so every player who joins needs the same jar in their own game. See Join a modded server from your launcher.

To put the server on Forge 1.20.1, open JAR Manager under More, choose Forge under Server software and 1.20.1 under Minecraft version, then press Apply change. Switching reinstalls the server and keeps your world, but make a backup first in the Backups tab. Change your Minecraft version or mod loader has the full steps.

Why the store won't install it

You can find The Quackening in the Mods tab by pressing the CurseForge chip in the source chip row at the top of the tab and searching for The Quackening. Pressing Install is refused, though. CurseForge records that the author doesn't allow third-party downloads, and the panel shows "Couldn't install The Quackening" with the message "Its author only allows downloads through CurseForge's own app. Download it there and upload it in Files."

Upload the jar yourself

  1. On your own computer, open the mod's CurseForge page in your browser.
  2. Download the newest file, TheQuackening_minor_fixes.jar. It is about 7.8 MB.
  3. In the panel, open File Manager and go into the mods folder. Forge creates it on the first start, so if you can't see it, start the server once.
  4. Press Upload and choose the jar. The browser upload limit is 100 MB per file, so this one fits easily. For larger files, connect over SFTP.
  5. Add GeckoLib. In the Mods tab press the Modrinth chip in the source chip row at the top of the tab, search for GeckoLib and press Install on the Forge 1.20.1 build. Without it the server stops at the next step.
  6. Restart the server from the Console tab.

Open Mods and the Installed view to check. The jar should be listed, under the name DuckensInvasion (the mod's own name inside the jar), next to GeckoLib.

Common problems

  • The server stops at start and the log names GeckoLib or GeoEntity: GeckoLib is missing. Install it from the Mods tab as in step 5, then start the server again.
  • The server crashes or the mod doesn't load: check the server really is on Forge 1.20.1. The jar names Minecraft 1.20.1 as its only version. Fix mod and plugin errors on Minecraft explains how to read the log.
  • Players are refused on joining: their game needs the same jar and Forge 1.20.1. Fix the mismatched mod channel list error lists what that message means.
  • You want to update it: the store can't, since it can't download the mod. Upload a newer jar by hand and delete the old one first, so two copies don't load.
